Elastic dipole tensors and relaxation volumes of point defects in concentrated random magnetic Fe-Cr alloys

Jan S. Wrobel et al.

Summary: The study investigates point defects in body-centred cubic Fe, Cr, and concentrated random magnetic Fe-Cr alloys using density functional theory and theory of elasticity. It finds significant fluctuations in elastic dipole and relaxation volume tensors of vacancies and self-interstitial atom (SIA) defects, showing a correlation between elastic relaxation volumes and magnetic moments of defects. The properties of point defects in alloys are found to differ significantly depending on the Cr content, with magnetism playing a significant role in influencing the elastic fields of defects in Fe-Cr alloys.

The Effect of Yttrium Addition on the Microstructure and Irradiation Hardening in V-4Cr-4Ti Alloy under Self-Ion Irradiation

Hongtai Luo et al.

Summary: The microstructure and irradiation hardening of V-4Cr-4Ti alloys with different yttrium contents were studied through self-ion irradiation at 550 degrees C. It was found that with the increase of yttrium content, both the size and number density of dislocation loops decreased, while the irradiation hardness increment showed a decreasing-then-increasing trend. The addition of 0.1wt.% Y is considered reasonable for reducing irradiation hardening in V-4Cr-4Ti alloys.

Density functional theory predictions of the mechanical properties of crystalline materials

Evan Kiely et al.

Summary: Density functional theory (DFT) is an effective computational tool for predicting the mechanical response of crystalline materials, correlating with experimental techniques such as nanoindentation and high-pressure X-ray crystallography. It allows for understanding of elastic anisotropy in complex crystalline systems and can predict elastic constants for materials like ice, biomolecular crystals, polymer crystals, and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Key parameters for theorists to consider include exchange-correlation functionals and dispersion corrections.
