Temperature-dependent cavity swelling in dual-ion irradiated Fe and Fe-Cr ferritic alloys

Yan-Ru Lin et al.

Summary: In this study, the cavity swelling behavior in different alloys under dual ion irradiations was investigated, revealing the impact of irradiation temperature and solute concentration on cavity swelling. The findings suggest that pure Fe has a lower peak swelling temperature compared to Fe-Cr alloys, and chromium solute plays a significant role in suppressing cavity swelling at lower temperatures but has little effect at higher temperatures.

Dislocation Loops in Proton Irradiated Uranium-Nitrogen-Oxygen System

Pengyuan Xiu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the type of dislocation loops formed in the proton-irradiated uranium-nitrogen-oxygen system and found that different phases have different types of dislocation loops. Molecular statics calculations showed a critical loop size of about 6 nm in the UN phase, above which perfect loops are thermodynamically favorable.

The Role of Co-injected Helium on Swelling and Cavity Evolution at High Damage Levels in Ferritic-Martensitic Steels

D. Woodley et al.

Summary: The study found that helium isotopes enhance cavity nucleation at low damage levels, resulting in maximum swelling at high helium co-injection rates. However, as the damage level increases, the helium content at which swelling is maximized shifts towards lower helium concentrations, ultimately leading to the highest swelling occurring with zero helium at 150 dpa.

Predicting structural material degradation in advanced nuclear reactors with ion irradiation

Summary: Researchers have successfully replicated swelling in a candidate alloy within approximately 2 years of irradiation in a nuclear reactor using dual ion irradiation in about 1 day. This highlights the potential of accelerated radiation damage experiments and the capability to predict the effects of radiation in reactors.
