Impact of the thermomechanical load on subsurface phase transformations during cryogenic turning of metastable austenitic steels

Hendrik Hotz et al.

Summary: Machining metastable austenitic stainless steel with cryogenic cooling induces a deformation-induced phase transformation from gamma-austenite to alpha'-martensite in the subsurface, resulting in higher microhardness and improved fatigue and wear resistance. Increasing passive forces and cutting forces promote the phase transformation, while higher temperatures inhibit it, with feed force having no significant influence. Proposed models allow for estimating alpha'-martensite content during cryogenic turning using in-situ measurement of process forces and temperatures.

Eddy Current Detection of the Martensitic Transformation in AISI304 Induced upon Cryogenic Cutting

Lara V. Fricke et al.

Summary: This study successfully created a hardened martensitic subsurface layer during machining process through cryogenic, external turning method. Eddy current testing and analysis of higher harmonics were used to detect the ferromagnetic, martensitic phase in the parent austenite, and a good correlation was found between the amplitude of the signals measured and the martensite content. Eddy current testing is considered as a suitable real-time, nondestructive testing method for generating a tailored, deformation-induced martensitic subsurface layer during external turning.

Deformation-induced martensitic transformation in AISI304 by cryogenic machining

Lara Vivian Fricke et al.

Summary: By lowering the machining temperature, martensitic transformation can be achieved in steel grains independently of the Schmid factor. At higher temperatures, grains with higher Schmid factor are more likely to transform into martensite. Therefore, during the machining process, choosing the appropriate temperature or performing texture treatment can promote martensitic transformation.
