Nanoscale structural heterogeneity and magnetic properties of Fe-based amorphous alloys via Co and Ni additions

Z. Z. Yang et al.

Summary: The nanoscale structural heterogeneity of Fe80-xMxSi9B11 amorphous alloys was quantitatively investigated using small-angle X-ray scattering and atomic force microscopy. It was found that the structural heterogeneity increases with Ni substitution but decreases with Co content. The changes in structural heterogeneity were verified by the changes in mechanical behavior and magnetic properties.

Short-range order controlling atomic dynamics in Y-based metallic glasses

S. F. Wei et al.

Summary: In this study, the origins of pronounced and unpronounced beta-relaxation behaviors in Y60Ni16Al24 and Y60Fe16Al24 metallic glasses were elucidated using experimental and theoretical approaches. The results indicate that the atomic dynamics of mobile atoms are not only related to their local geometry, but also to their chemical compositions.

Structure and Magnetic Properties of Thermodynamically Predicted Rapidly Quenched Fe85-xCuxB15 Alloys

Lukasz Hawelek et al.

Summary: In this study, the influence of Cu for Fe substitution on the crystal structure and magnetic properties of Fe85B15 alloy was comprehensively investigated based on thermodynamic predictions and heat treatment optimization. It was found that the alloy with 0.6% Cu content exhibited the minimum Delta G(amoprh) value, and the nanocomposite state obtained by annealing under optimal conditions showed the least core power losses.

The correlation between β relaxation and shear transformation zone in LaNiAl bulk metallic glasses: The effect of cryogenic thermal cycling treatment

Z. Liu et al.

Summary: This study found opposite changing trends of activation energies for beta relaxation and STZ in La60Ni25Al15 metallic glass before and after cryogenic thermal cycling treatment. Specifically, larger STZ requires higher W-STZ, while lower E-beta is needed to activate atoms involved in string-like motions. These results will deepen our understanding of the correlation between relaxation and deformation carriers in La-based metallic glasses.

Visco-elasticity and mechanical relaxation behavior in La-based metallic glasses

M. N. Liu et al.

Summary: The dynamic mechanical relaxation behavior of two different bulk metallic glasses was examined, showing distinct characteristics in the relaxation process, where physical aging resulted in a decrease in beta relaxation intensity and an increase in relaxation time. This behavior was found to be linearly correlated, similar to that observed in organic glasses, suggesting a potential common mechanism underlying relaxation processes in different types of glasses.

Metallic Nanoglasses with Promoted β-Relaxation and Tensile Plasticity

Qun Yang et al.

Summary: Nanoglasses exhibit promoted beta-relaxation and enhanced microscale tensile plasticity compared to rapidly melt-quenched metallic glasses. The beta-relaxation is sensitive to the interfacial regions among grains in nanoglasses, showing a clear correlation between amorphous nanostructures and the beta-relaxation.

Design of Fe-based nanocrystalline alloys with superior magnetization and manufacturability

Hu Li et al.

Summary: A revolutionary nanostructure design concept was proposed in this study to improve the magnetic properties of Fe-based alloys by preforming dense nuclei and refining nano-structure via transient metalloid-rich interfaces. A novel alloy composition with superior magnetic properties was developed using only 4.6 wt.% light metalloids, showing great potential as a substitute for commercial bulk Si-steels in soft-magnetic applications.
