Association Between Concussions and Suicidality in High School Students in the United States

However, this study found that after controlling for other relevant variables, there was no significant association between concussion and suicidality, except for a significant relationship between concussion and suicide attempts in boys.

Marijuana Use Is Associated With Suicidal Ideation and Behavior Among US Adolescents at Rates Similar to Tobacco and Alcohol

Summary: This study used data from the National Youth Risk Behavior Survey to examine the association between adolescent marijuana, tobacco, and alcohol use and suicidal ideation and attempts over a period of six years (2011-2017). The results showed that marijuana use was more strongly associated with suicide attempts than ideation, and frequent use had a significantly greater risk. Despite changing attitudes toward marijuana, the effect has not changed substantively since 2011. Marijuana is comparable to other substances, with similar results found for tobacco, while frequent alcohol use had a stronger association than other substances.

The Association Between Sports- or Physical Activity-Related Concussions and Suicidality Among US High School Students, 2017

Summary: This study examined the association between sports- or physical activity-related concussions and suicidality, finding that risk factors such as persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness, low academic grades, and substance use increase the odds of suicidality, while protective factors such as physical activity and sports team participation decrease the odds. The study used data from a nationally representative survey of US high school students and found that the association between concussions and suicidality was significant even after adjusting for demographic characteristics, with no moderation by other factors.

Summary: A study found a positive correlation between physical teen dating violence (TDV) and suicidal behaviors among adolescents, with those who experienced physical TDV more likely to have suicidal ideation, suicide plan, and suicide attempt. Other significant predictors of suicidal behaviors include being a sexual minority, experiencing forced sex, bullying, feeling sad or hopeless, and binge drinking. Sufficient sleep was found to lower the odds of suicidal ideation and suicide plan.
