Observation of de Vries-like properties in bent-core molecules

Supreet Kaur et al.

Summary: A series of newly designed achiral unsymmetrical bent-core molecules with terminal alkoxy chains, exhibiting similar properties to de Vries liquid crystals, were reported for the first time. Microscopic investigations and SAXS/WAXS studies revealed the phase sequences and layer shrinkage of the materials. The calculated molecular tilt angle and temperature-dependent birefringence measurements suggest that the materials may have de Vries-like properties.

Design, Synthesis and Characterization of Achiral Unsymmetrical Four-ring based Hockey-stick Shaped Liquid Crystals: Structure-Property relationship

Varsha Jain et al.

Summary: Hockey-stick-shaped liquid crystals exhibit unique physical properties such as promising ferroelectric-like switching and large flexoelectricity. The addition of polar moieties can lead to the development of permanent dipole moment in molecules, affecting the phase structure and physical properties.
