Living Long and Prosperous: Productive Intraligand Charge-Transfer States from a Rhenium(I) Terpyridine Photosensitizer with Enhanced Light Absorption

Ricardo Fernandez-Teran et al.

Summary: The ground- and excited-state properties of six rhenium(I)kappa N-2-tricarbonyl complexes with 4'-(4-substituted-phenyl)-terpyridine ligands bearing substituents of different electron-donating abilities were evaluated. Significant changes in electrochemical potentials and triplet metal-to-ligand charge-transfer lifetimes were observed, with the most electron-donating group leading to the appearance of a strong absorption band and a dramatic enhancement of the excited-state lifetime. The dynamics and character of the excited states were assigned using a combination of techniques, and selected complexes showed promising results as photosensitizers for hydrogen production.

Terpyridine-Based 3D Metal-Organic-Frameworks: A Structure-Property Correlation

Syed Meheboob Elahi et al.

Summary: Design, synthesis, and applications of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are important fields of research in modern inorganic and materials chemistry. The choice of ligand system, such as terpyridine, plays a crucial role in the design of MOFs and can lead to the formation of a variety of frameworks with unique physicochemical characteristics. By constructing 3D MOFs associated with symmetrical terpyridines, additional organic functionalities can be incorporated to create higher dimensional frameworks with diverse properties like photophysical behaviors, chemical selectivity, and magnetism. This approach provides insights into the potential applications of these MOFs in various areas such as photocatalytic degradation and proton conductivity.

Zarina M. Efimenko et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the cocrystallization of nitrosoguanidinate complexes with various iodine compounds to form new solid structures featuring asymmetric bifurcated halogen bonds. DFT calculations were used to evaluate the energetic features of these halogen bonds, revealing that the I...O contact is generally stronger than the I...N contact. Computational tools such as MEP, QTAIM, and NCIPlot were employed to characterize the bifurcated halogen bonds in the cocrystals.

Azine Steric Hindrances Switch Halogen Bonding to N-Arylation upon Interplay with σ-Hole Donating Haloarenenitriles

Summary: The reaction between XNPN and various azines proceeds differently based on the steric and electronic effects of the heterocycles. Sterically unhindered azines undergo N-arylation to form azinium salts, while sterically hindered or electron-deficient azines form stable co-crystals with XNPN through halogen bonding. The halogen bonds in the obtained co-crystals were analyzed and evaluated using various techniques, with estimated energies ranging from -7.6 kcal/mol to -11.4 kcal/mol.

Highly polar stacking interactions wrap inorganics in organics: lone-pair-π-hole interactions between the PdO4 core and electron-deficient arenes

Yury Torubaev et al.

Summary: The study revealed that cocrystallization of iodine(i)-based perfluoroarenes with palladium acetate cluster resulted in significant noncovalent interactions, as confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffractometry. In the structures, aromatic rings were coupled with the cluster through lone pair-pi-(Ar-F)-hole interactions, while iodine-containing arenes were engaged in halogen bonding with carboxylate O centers. The electron-rich PdO4 plane behaved as a nucleophile providing oxygen lone pairs, complementing the pi-acidic surface of the arenes in circular stacking.

Electron belt-to-σ-hole switch of noncovalently bound iodine(I) atoms in dithiocarbamate metal complexes

Lev E. Zelenkov et al.

Summary: Co-crystallization of dithiocarbamate complexes [M-II(S2CNEt2)(2)] (M = Cu 1, Ni 2, Pd 3, Pt 4) with 1,3,5-triiodotrifluorobenzene (FIB) forms an isomorphic series of co-crystals showing quadruple Cu/Ni/Pd/Pt isostructural exchange. The negative electrostatic potentials of Cu, Ni, Pd, and Pt decrease in the order Cu-II (-8.8) > Ni-II (-24.5) > Pd-II (-28.6) > Pt-II (-33.3 kcal mol(-1)), with Cu showing a shift from semicoordination to halogen bonding due to electron belt-to-s-hole switch. Semicoordinative contact Cu•••I is established by LP(I)-> LP*(Cu) charge transfer analysis. The more nucleophilic Pd and Pt centers exhibit unconventional metal-involving halogen bonding contacts with FIB, with the strongest interactions observed between Pt and the iodine(I)-based donors.
