Investigation of tribological properties of environmentally friendly ionic liquids as a potential lubricity improving additives for water-based lubricants

Raimondas Kreivaitis et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the tribological properties of two protic ionic liquids used as lubricity-improving additives in water. The results show that these additives can greatly improve the lubricity of water, with the positive effect being attributed to the polarity of the additive molecules. The study also finds that the friction pair material and additive concentration play a significant role in the tribological effect. Additionally, both investigated protic ionic liquids can enhance the anticorrosion properties of water.

Physicochemical and tribological properties of gemini-type halogen-free dicationic ionic liquids

Qiangliang Yu et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that halogen-free dicationic ionic liquids exhibit excellent friction-reducing and anti-wear properties, especially at high temperatures. Analysis of worn surfaces reveals that the effectiveness of ILs is attributed to the formation of high quality tribofilms consisting of both tribochemical reaction and ordered absorption films.
