Molecular Insight into Microstructural and Dynamical Heterogeneities in Magnesium Ionic Liquid Electrolytes

Long Su et al.

Summary: Ionic liquids show promise as designer solvents for multivalent electrolytes, with the ability to modulate solvate species interactions. Research on the molecular mechanisms and impact of ion clusters on electrolyte properties is lacking compared to ion pairs. Studies indicate that ion clusters can effectively suppress ion agglomeration in Mg electrolytes, leading to improved Coulombic efficiency for the reversible Mg deposition/stripping process. This highlights the importance of microstructural and dynamical heterogeneities in the rational design of enhanced multivalent electrolytes.

Molecular-level insights into structure and dynamics in ionic liquids and polymer gel electrolytes

Mounesha N. Garaga et al.

Summary: Designing new electrolytes requires a better understanding of the correlation between their transport properties and molecular structure. This study utilizes nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy to probe the structure and dynamics of ionic liquids and polymer gel electrolytes. Results show that diffusivity of [P4441][TFSI] ILs is greater than [N4441][TFSI] ILs in both liquid and gel electrolytes, and higher PMMA content in samples affects the interaction between ions and polymer.

Recent trends in the benign-by-design electrolytes for zinc batteries

Farva Ilyas et al.

Summary: An electrolyte creates a pathway for zinc ions to migrate in a zinc-based battery system. Different electrolytes like ionic liquids and deep eutectic solvents are being investigated to address issues related to Zn plating/stripping, Zn anode stability, and cathode efficiency. Despite significant achievements, the field of ionic liquid surface science concerning zinc systems is still in its early stages.

Anion-cation interactions in novel ionic liquids based on an asymmetric sulfonimide anion observed by NMR and MD simulations

Derick Gyabeng et al.

Summary: The interaction between ions in two novel ionic liquids containing DFTFSI anion was investigated, showing that the protonated end of DFTFSI preferentially interacts with IL cations. MD simulations also revealed hydrogen bonding interactions between DFTFSI and methoxy-functionalised cation, explaining the lower ionic conductivity and higher density in this IL compared to the C(3)mpyr DFTFSI system.

Unraveling Ion Dynamics and Interactions in an Ionic Liquid Electrolyte with a Protonated Anion for Lithium Batteries

Derick Gyabeng et al.

Summary: This study investigates ion associations in two ionic liquid electrolytes based on the novel asymmetric anion DFTFSI. The results show that the proximity of Li-H( anion) disrupts the hydrogen bonding interaction between the anion and cation in the IL electrolyte. Additionally, the C3mpyr DFTFSI-based IL electrolyte demonstrates excellent Li compatibility for future lithium-battery applications.

Enhanced Li+ Transport in Ionic Liquid-Based Electrolytes Aided by Fluorinated Ethers for Highly Efficient Lithium Metal Batteries with Improved Rate Capability

Xu Liu et al.

Summary: FSI-based ionic liquids show promise as electrolytes for longlife and safe lithium metal batteries, and the addition of BTFE can effectively enhance Li+ transport while maintaining compatibility with lithium metal. Raman spectroscopy and small-angle X-ray scattering demonstrate improved Li+ transport in the optimized electrolyte, [LiFSI]3[Pyr(14)FSI]4[BTFE]4 (Li3Py4BT4), leading to better performance in Li/LiFePO4 cells.

Ionic Liquid in Li Salt Electrolyte: Modifying the Li+ Transport Mechanism by Coordination to an Asymmetric Anion

Marc Brinkkoetter et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that in binary ionic liquid/Li salt electrolytes, the use of asymmetric anions can reduce crystallization tendencies and enable liquid systems with high Li concentration. The research elucidates the local coordination environment of Li and its correlation with Li+ ion transport properties, providing insights into the structural Li+ ion transport which is crucial for developing efficient ionic liquid-based batteries.
