Past research and future strategies for molten chlorides application in concentrated solar power technology

Mickael Lambrecht et al.

Summary: This review summarizes past research on heat transfer fluids (HTF) containing material used in concentrated solar power (CSP) plants, with a focus on chloride molten salts. The low cost and wide operating temperature range of these salts make them potential candidates for future CSP plants, especially if nanoparticles are added to enhance their performance. However, their aggressive behavior requires the selection of long-lasting resistant alloys, and a better understanding of corrosion mechanisms and the effects of alloying elements. The article also discusses strategies for mitigating salt impurities through purification processes, and presents thermogravimetric analysis and numerical simulations for salt preparation and modeling alloy activities and their interaction with molten chlorides.

Remarks on use of the term deep eutectic solvent in analytical chemistry

Vasil Andruch et al.

Summary: About 20 years ago, Abbott and co-workers researched new solvents based on mixtures of choline chloride with urea and carboxylic acids, which were liquid at ambient temperature. These mixtures were later named deep eutectic solvents (DES) and quickly gained attention in chemical and materials research. Different definitions of DES have been proposed, leading to differing views among researchers. A phase diagram is needed to correctly assign a solvent to the DES or eutectic solvent (ES) group, based on deviation from ideality and liquid window. It is important for authors to use the terms DES or ES accurately in publications to further develop the utilization of these solvents.

Hydrophobic magnetic deep eutectic solvent: Synthesis, properties, and application in DNA separation

Xuelian Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, four hydrophobic magnetic deep eutectic solvents (HMDESs) were designed and prepared for DNA extraction, with the conformations of HMDESs simulated and their H-bonding interactions investigated using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The physical and thermal properties of HMDESs were characterized, and DNA extracted by HMDESs could be quickly collected by an external magnet. Three auxiliary extraction methods were introduced, and factors impacting the DNA extraction process were systematically investigated through single-factor experimental analysis. The proposed extraction method successfully extracted DNA from complex matrices and E. coli cell lysate, and the binding sites between HMDESs and DNA were studied.

Basics and properties of deep eutectic solvents: a review

Tracy El Achkar et al.

Summary: Deep eutectic solvents, emerging in green chemistry only seventeen years ago, have led to a plethora of publications covering various research areas and diverse fields of application. They are seen as promising alternatives to conventional organic solvents due to their straightforward preparation using highly accessible and natural compounds, as well as high tunability in properties. The physicochemical properties of these solvents, such as phase behavior, density, viscosity, ionic conductivity, surface tension, and polarity, can be controlled by factors like the choice of forming compounds, molar ratio, temperature, and water content.
