Electrically driven structures in bent-core nematics

Nandor Eber et al.

Summary: This review focuses on electrically driven patterns and defects in bent core nematics (BCNs) made of hard-core, soft-core, or bent-rod type of molecules. It discusses spatially periodic patterns associated with electroconvection and flexoelectric deformation, dislocations in patterned states, and various types of defects induced in homogeneous, unpatterned states of BCNs. The review also highlights the potential of electric field-induced patterns to serve as optical gratings for designing new photonic devices.

Light-driven rotation of gratings formed by electroconvection patterns in cholesteric liquid crystals

Ying Xiang et al.

Summary: Gratings induced by periodic flow provide wide tunability by utilizing the pattern formation mechanism and its dependence on material properties. In a hybrid aligned cholesteric liquid crystal containing a chiral photosensitive dopant, electric-field induced patterns can be rotated by UV light altering the helical pitch. Such tunability opens up possibilities for controlling complex fluids in developing photonic devices with desired parameters.

Co-revolving topological defects in a nematic liquid crystal

Adam L. Susser et al.

Summary: A patterned surface defect of strength m = +1 can decompose into a pair of surface defects and disclination lines of strength m = +1/2, which exhibit different behaviors under an applied electric field. Experimental results suggest that the threshold for full co-revolution of defects scales with frequency ν(1/2), and the induced fluctuations and co-revolutions are strongly coupled to and driven by the presence of nematic electrohydrodynamic instabilities. This behavior implies a Lehmann-like mechanism driving the co-revolution of defects.
