Bacteriophage treatment of disseminated cutaneous Mycobacterium chelonae infection

Summary: The use of bacteriophage in combination with antimicrobial therapy was effective in improving disease response in a patient with multidrug-resistant M. chelonae infection. Despite the development of neutralizing antibodies against the bacteriophage, the patient continued to show stable improvement with no evidence of bacterial resistance to the phage.

Nebulized Bacteriophage in a Patient With Refractory Mycobacterium abscessus Lung Disease

Summary: An elderly man with refractory Mycobacterium abscessus lung disease developed neutralizing antibodies during intravenous phage therapy. Nebulization therapy with phages resulted in temporary weight gain, decreased C-reactive protein levels, and reduced Mycobacterium burden. Weak sputum neutralization may have affected the outcomes, but phage resistance did not contribute.

Bacteriophage as an alternative to prevent reptile-associated Salmonella transmission

Summary: This study isolated and characterized the bacteriophage pSal-SNUABM-02, which infects and lyses reptile Salmonella isolates. The phage demonstrated vigorous lysis activity against planktonic cells and showed effectiveness in biofilm degradation on reptile skin and polystyrene plates, making it a promising alternative to antibiotics for the prevention and eradication of reptile-associated salmonellosis.

Development and validation of a miniaturized bacteriophage host range screening assay against antibiotic resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa

Summary: This study established and validated a scaled-down methodology for high-throughput screening of bacteriophages isolated and purified from wastewater samples. The miniaturized host range assay against clinical Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates using a spot test was found to be both sensitive and specific, with a high positive predictive value and negative predictive value. The study confirmed the breadth of host range of bacteriophages with lytic activity on P. aeruginosa isolates using the scaled down assay, demonstrating the potential for future automation in testing phage diversity and efficacy as antimicrobials.

Efficacy of Bacteriophage Cocktail to Control E. coli O157:H7 Contamination on Baby Spinach Leaves in the Presence or Absence of Organic Load

Summary: The study demonstrates that a lytic bacteriophage cocktail can significantly reduce contamination of Escherichia coli O157:H7, representing a 99.99% pathogen reduction in a high organic load environment. This highlights the advantage of using bacteriophages to eliminate foodborne pathogen contamination on fruits and vegetables.
