Effect of Direct Fluorination on the Transport Properties and Swelling of Polymeric Materials: A Review

Nikolay A. Belov et al.

Summary: Fluorine-containing polymers have unique properties that can be enhanced through surface fluorination to improve gas, vapor, and liquid transport. Increasing the duration and concentration of fluorination reduces permeability and increases selectivity for separations. Fluorination also improves chemical resistance in rubbers and enhances the performance of fuel cell membranes.

The effect of chain rigidity and microporosity on the sub-ambient temperature gas separation properties of intrinsic microporous polyimides

Wenhui Ji et al.

Summary: The relationship between the rigidity, microporosity, and ideal gas separation properties in polymers of intrinsic microporosity (PIM) is important but understudied. Research comparing two different PIM polymers, PIM-DB-PI and PIM-PI-1, showed that both rigidity and microporosity play key roles in fine-tuning gas transport through polymer membranes. Microporosity has a dominant effect on gas diffusion selectivity, while rigidity primarily impacts the critical diffusion penetrate size of PIM-PI membranes.

Summary: The study demonstrated the significant influence of water content on gas permeation behavior in PFSA, with permeability increasing significantly with higher relative humidity. The permeability and selectivity of H2S showed different trends compared to CO2 and CH4, and the increase in temperature also impacted the permeability of H2S.

Remarkably enhanced gas separation properties of PIM-1 at sub-ambient temperatures

Wenhui Ji et al.

Summary: This study comprehensively characterized the gas separation performance of PIM-1 at low temperatures for the first time, showing a continuous decrease in gas permeability and a significant increase in ideal gas pair selectivity as temperature decreases. PIM-1 exhibited high O-2 and CO2 permeability as well as ideal selectivity at -30 degrees C, with the enhanced performance attributed to the shrinkage of micropores in PIM-1 at low temperatures.

Gas separation performance of copolymers of perfluoro(butenyl vinyl ether) and perfluoro(2,2-dimethyl-1,3-dioxole)

Moataz Ali El-Okazy et al.

Summary: Amorphous glassy perfluorinated polymers possess high gas permeability, chemical inertness, thermal stability, and superior separation performance, particularly when copolymerized with perfluoro(butenyl vinyl ether) (PBVE) and perfluoro(2,2-dimethyl-1,3-dioxole) (PDD) at different ratios. Higher PBVE content results in lower gas permeability and higher selectivity. The copolymers show promising separation performance at high temperatures and exhibit increased H-2/CO2 selectivity with temperature.
