Cellulose Membranes in the Treatment of Spent Deep Eutectic Solvent Used in the Recovery of Lignin from Lignocellulosic Biomass

Vadim Ippolitov et al.

Summary: Ultrafiltration was utilized in the purification of spent Deep Eutectic Solvent (DES) to recover lignin fractions and purify the solvent. By adding ethanol as a cosolvent and utilizing 10 kDa and 5 kDa membranes in a two-pass ultrafiltration process, about 95% of dissolved polymeric compounds were removed from the spent DES.

Grafting PEG on cellulose nanocrystals via polydopamine chemistry and the effects of PEG graft length on the mechanical performance of composite film

Ting Zheng et al.

Summary: In this study, cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) were modified with PEG of different lengths to reinforce polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). It was found that shorter PEG graft lengths enhance strength and stiffness, while longer lengths improve toughness of the PVA/CNC composites.

On the organic solvent free preparation of ultrafiltration and nanofiltration membranes using polyelectrolyte complexation in an all aqueous phase inversion process

Johannes Kamp et al.

Summary: This study introduces a method for fabricating polyelectrolyte complex membranes using salt dilution induced phase separation, resulting in membranes with different morphologies and separation properties. The precipitation of polyelectrolytes is induced by the diffusion of salt and water in the two-phase region, forming porous PEC membranes.

Mesophase characteristics of cellulose nanocrystal films prepared from electrolyte suspensions

Soo-Ah Jin et al.

Summary: In this study, optically-active CNC films were prepared from different electrolyte suspensions to investigate the effects of counterion type and ionic strength on mesomorphic behavior and cholesteric arrangement. The presence of electrolytes was found to influence CNC colloidal stability and alter interactions among neighboring CNCs and water, impacting the formation of the mesophase. Factors such as cationic radius and charge valence were discovered to affect mesomorphic behavior and CNC alignment, providing insights for adjusting the optical properties of CNC films for specific applications.

Sustainable Aqueous Phase Separation membranes prepared through mild pH shift induced polyelectrolyte complexation of PSS and PEI

Muhammad Irshad Baig et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the preparation of APS membranes with tunable pore sizes under mild pH conditions based on the complexation of PSS and PEI in acetate buffer coagulation baths. By systematically varying the molecular weight of PEI, buffer solution pH, and concentration of cross-linking agent, the researchers were able to control and optimize membrane fabrication conditions, achieving tight nanofiltration membranes with excellent separation properties.

Controlling Ultrafiltration Membrane Rejection via Shear-Aligned Deposition of Cellulose Nanocrystals from Aqueous Suspensions

Ceren Kocaman et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that CNCs aligned in the direction of flow under high shear rate, forming a nematic order which improved the rejection properties of ultrafiltration membranes. By controlling the shear rate, the order parameter of CNCs could be adjusted, affecting the membrane's rejection performance towards different molecules.
