Mechanically alloyed high entropy alloys: existing challenges and opportunities

Akshay Kumar et al.

Summary: High entropy alloys (HEAs) were first reported in 2004, but significant progress in this field has been made since 2010 due to their unique properties and the ability to form various compositions. Researchers initially focused on equiatomic HEAs and later shifted to non-equiatomic alloys. Mechanical alloying and sintering were identified as effective methods for processing HEAs. This review discusses the properties, functional properties, and applications of mechanically alloyed HEAs, as well as the existing challenges and opportunities.

Microstructure and Corrosion Performance of Aluminium Matrix Composites Reinforced with Refractory High-Entropy Alloy Particulates

Elias Ananiadis et al.

Summary: Novel aluminium matrix composites reinforced by MoTaNbVW refractory high-entropy alloy (HEA) particulates were fabricated by powder metallurgy. The composites exhibited low porosity, good homogeneity, few defects, and good distribution of the reinforcing phase in the Al matrix. However, increasing the volume of the reinforcing phase led to increased hardness values, while the Al-HEA composites showed susceptibility to localised forms of corrosion in 3.5% NaCl solution.

Significantly improving strength and plasticity of Al-based composites by in-situ formed AlCoCrFeNi core-shell structure

Yunzi Liu et al.

Summary: The mechanical properties of Al matrix composites reinforced by AlCoCrFeNi high entropy alloy particles were significantly enhanced after spark plasma sintering at 600 degrees C due to the formation of reinforcement core-shell structure. The dependence of mechanical properties and fracture behavior on the reinforcement core-shell structure was investigated based on the modified Ramakrishnan model and finite element simulation, revealing the crucial role of grain types and relationships in the shell on the material performance.

EFFECT OF MILLING DURATION ON OXIDE-FORMATION BEHAvIOR OF OXIDE-DISPERSION-STRENGTHENED HIGH-ENTROPY ALLOYS

Yonowook Song et al.

Summary: Oxide-dispersion-strengthened high-entropy alloys were produced by hot-pressing a ball-milled mixture of Y2O3 and atomized CoCrFeMnNi powder. The effect of milling duration on grain size reduction, oxide formation behavior, and the resulting mechanical properties of the alloys was studied. It was found that the alloy powder experienced severe plastic deformation, reducing grain size and forming in-situ second phases at defects.
