Ultrasonic welding of short carbon fiber reinforced PEEK with spherical surface anvils

Yuanduo Yang et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a novel ultrasonic welding method using a spherical surface anvil to concentrate the welding energy at the desired location, reducing scattered welds. The approach is feasible and effective for welding carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastic materials.

Numerical Study of Contact Behavior and Temperature Characterization in Ultrasonic Welding of CF/PA66

Yuanduo Yang et al.

Summary: This paper numerically analyzes the contact behavior and temperature characterization during ultrasonic plastic welding using the harmonic balance method. The results show that amplitude and welding time are important factors determining the interface temperature, while plunging speed and trigger force have little effect. Furthermore, the study reveals that the heat generation mechanism changes during different stages of welding.

The effects of misaligned adherends on static ultrasonic welding of thermoplastic composites

C. B. G. Brito et al.

Summary: This research investigates the influence of misaligned adherends on static ultrasonic welding of thermoplastic composites by creating different angles through changing the clamping configuration. The results show that increasing the angle between adherends decreases power consumption, increases process time, decreases weld uniformity, and increases the risk of overheating. Reducing the top adherends' bending stiffness by increasing the clamping distance significantly reduces the adverse effects of adherend misalignment on weld quality.

Investigation of Ultrasonically Welded Thermoplastic Composite Joints Using Netlike Energy Directors

Kaifeng Wang et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a netlike energy director made of carbon fiber-reinforced thermoplastic composites for ultrasonic welding. The research finds that using netlike energy directors can accelerate the welding process and improve joint quality. However, an increase in the thickness of the netlike energy director leads to a decrease in the maximum shear load.

Thermal effects on the performance of ultrasonically welded CF/PPS joints and its correlation to the degree of crystallinity at the weldline

N. Koutras et al.

Summary: The research found that there are significant differences in weld performance and failure mechanisms at different temperatures. Higher crystallinity of PPS at the weldline is beneficial for improving weld strength at high temperatures, while amorphous weldline has an advantage at low temperatures due to its higher toughness and ductility.
