Strain engineering in single-, bi- and tri-layer MoS2, MoSe2, WS2 and WSe2

Felix Carrascoso et al.

Summary: This research utilizes strain to modify the optical properties of semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides, with a focus on MoS2, MoSe2, WS2, and WSe2. The study provides detailed technical descriptions for performing uniaxial strain measurements and proposes a calibration method for accurately determining the applied strain. Reflectance spectroscopy is then employed to analyze the strain tunability of electronic properties in single-, bi-, and tri-layer MoS2, MoSe2, WS2, and WSe2, with an assessment of flake-to-flake variability in 15 single-layer MoS2 flakes.

Biaxial strain tuned magnetic anisotropy of ferromagnetic penta-MnN2 monolayer

Chunyan Xu et al.

Summary: In this study, penta-MnN2 monolayer was found to exhibit ferromagnetism and perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, which can be manipulated by applying strain. The research results may broaden the development of two-dimensional ferromagnetic materials for potential applications in two-dimensional spintronic nanodevices.

Thickness-dependent anisotropic transport of phonons and charges in few-layered PdSe2

Kai-Cheng Zhang et al.

Summary: Layered PdSe2 has tunable band-gap with varying layer numbers, and thickness-dependent properties have been studied with first-principles calculations. As the thickness increases, band edges and effective masses change, while bulk and few-layered PdSe2 show mechanical stability. The thermal conductivities, charge transport, and thermoelectric properties also vary with thickness, with few-layered PdSe2 exhibiting higher thermal conductivity and improved thermoelectric performance.
