Developing Efficient Small Molecule Acceptors with sp2-Hybridized Nitrogen at Different Positions by Density Functional Theory Calculations, Molecular Dynamics Simulations and Machine Learning

Asif Mahmood et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of nitrogen substitution on the performance of small molecule acceptors in organic solar cells. The results suggest that nitrogen substitution at the end-capping group is a better strategy for designing efficient small molecule acceptors.

Machine learning and molecular dynamics simulation-assisted evolutionary design and discovery pipeline to screen efficient small molecule acceptors for PTB7-Th-based organic solar cells with over 15% efficiency

Asif Mahmood et al.

Summary: Organic solar cells are the most promising candidates for future commercialization. A multidimensional design and discovery pipeline is introduced to systematize materials discovery and reduce dependence on experimentation. Machine learning models are trained to predict various properties, and more than 5000 new small molecule acceptors are designed and screened. The best predicted power conversion efficiency (PCE) is over 15%, paving the way for cost- and time-efficient discovery of novel materials.

Interpenetrated Metal-Porphyrinic Framework for Enhanced Nonlinear Optical Limiting

De-Jing Li et al.

Summary: This study presents the synthesis and characterization of two 3D porphyrinic MOFs, with one showing superior optical limiting performance compared to the other. The interpenetrated framework of the MOFs enhanced electron delocalization and transfer, leading to improved nonlinear optical properties. Adjusting the MOFs concentration and metalloporphyrin type optimized the optical limiting response in the MOFs/PDMS composites.

Synthesis, structures, DFT calculations, and catalytic application in the direct arylation of five-membered heteroarenes with aryl bromides of novel palladium-N-heterocyclic carbene PEPPSI-type complexes

Abd el-Krim Sandeli et al.

Summary: A new series of Pd-catalysts based on an N-heterocyclic carbene PEPPSI-type ligand was synthesized and fully characterized. The structural characterization of the complexes was performed via single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and the catalytic activity of these complexes was evaluated in the direct arylation of five-membered heteroaromatics. The results showed that the Pd-NHC complexes exhibited very good catalytic activity, particularly in selectively activating C-H bonds at specific positions in the heteroaromatic compounds.

Design and DFT study of nitrogen-rich donor systems for improved photovoltaic performance in dye-sensitized solar cells

Velayudhan V. Divya et al.

Summary: Eighteen electron-rich nitrogen incorporated donors with a butadiene pi-spacer and a cyanoacrylic acid acceptor have been designed for improving the photovoltaic performance of dye-sensitized solar cells. Analysis at the molecular electrostatic potential level and optical properties level showed that the increase in donating strength is proportional to the number of planar nitrogens in the donors. The most efficient photosensitizer for DSSC applications was identified as D12, with deepened understanding of the structure-performance relationship of the D-pi-A systems.
