Novel Antimicrobial 8-Hydroxyquinoline-Based Agents: Current Development, Structure-Activity Relationships, and Perspectives

Angelica Rocha Joaquim et al.

Summary: The search for new antimicrobials is crucial due to emerging resistance, and revisiting known classes like 8-hydroxyquinolines could be an interesting strategy. However, the underuse of drugs like nitroxoline and clioquinol, limited availability in few countries, has hindered their full potential.

Vanadium(IV) Complexes with Methyl-Substituted 8-Hydroxyquinolines: Catalytic Potential in the Oxidation of Hydrocarbons and Alcohols with Peroxides and Biological Activity

Joanna Palion-Gazda et al.

Summary: Methyl-substituted 8-hydroxyquinolines were used to synthesize five-coordinated oxovanadium(IV) complexes, which showed high catalytic activity in the oxidation of hydrocarbons with H2O2 in acetonitrile. The reaction led to the formation of cyclohexyl hydroperoxide, cyclohexanol, and cyclohexanone. Complexes 1 and 2 exhibited cytotoxic effects on colorectal and ovarian carcinoma cell lines, while complex 3 showed higher cytotoxicity in colorectal carcinoma cells, lower cytotoxicity in normal dermal fibroblasts, and no effect in ovarian carcinoma cells.

Understanding the Potential In Vitro Modes of Action of Bis(β-diketonato) Oxovanadium(IV) Complexes

Baris Sergi et al.

Summary: By screening nine compounds with varying functionality, the in vitro modes of action of bis(beta-diketonato) oxovanadium(IV) complexes were investigated. These complexes showed sensitivity against lung carcinoma cell line A549 and induced programmed cell death and DNA damage. Various biological techniques were employed to study the antiproliferative activity, apoptosis induction, DNA cleavage activity, and DNA base-pair binding preferences of the complexes.
