Hydraulic Modeling of Bridges in Two-Dimensional Shallow Water Models

Luis Cea et al.

Summary: This study compares two methods for including the effect of bridges in two-dimensional shallow water models. The results show that both methods can reproduce the observed bridge afflux, but the two-component pressure approach is less dependent on model calibration.

Roughness-Based Method for Simulating Hydraulic Consequences of Both Woody Debris Clogging and Breakage at Bridges in Basin-Scale Flood Modeling

Francesco Macchione et al.

Summary: The study suggests that obstructions at bridge can worsen flood hazard by causing backwater and potentially leading to dam break flow. However, a rigorous description of the interaction between flood and structure remains a challenge, and detailed modeling of localized phenomena would involve significant costs.

Interpreting the Manning Roughness Coefficient in Overland Flow Simulations with Coupled Hydrological-Hydraulic Distributed Models

Marcos Sanz-Ramos et al.

Summary: The study highlights the significance of Manning roughness coefficient in coupled hydrological-hydraulic distributed models for channel flow and rainfall-runoff processes. Three different approaches were used to adjust the Manning roughness coefficient in the study.

A 2D-SWEs framework for efficient catchment-scale simulations: Hydrodynamic scaling properties of river networks and implications for non-uniform grids generation

Pierfranco Costabile et al.

Summary: The application of 2D-SWEs in rainfall-runoff simulations at the catchment scale offers advanced flood mapping studies and hazard assessment, as well as innovative tools for analyzing river drainage networks. By studying the characteristics of river networks and the relationship between specific discharge thresholds and total areas of network cells, a heuristic process for non-uniform grid generation has been developed to detect hydrodynamically active areas in basins.

Modelling Weirs in Two-Dimensional Shallow Water Models

Gonzalo Garcia-Alen et al.

Summary: The study utilized 2D models based on the shallow water equations for simulating flow through weirs and presented an experimental dataset consisting of 194 experiments. A comparison between the experimental data and numerical results was conducted to quantify discrepancies due to non-fulfillment of the hydrostatic pressure hypotheses. The experimental dataset provided can be valuable for validating other modeling approaches.

How do modeling choices and erosion zone locations impact the representation of connectivity and the dynamics of suspended sediments in a multi-source soil erosion model?

Magdalena Uber et al.

Summary: Understanding soil erosion and suspended sediment transport in mesoscale watersheds is crucial for soil and water resources management in the critical zone. Spatially distributed physically based models are powerful tools in distinguishing the effects of structural and functional connectivity on suspended sediment flux dynamics. Model discretization and parameterization choices can significantly impact the representation of catchment structural connectivity.
