Using Automated Seepage Meters to Quantify the Spatial Variability and Net Flux of Groundwater to a Stream

C. Eric Humphrey et al.

Summary: Utilizing a newly developed automated seepage meter, this study in the Nebraska Sand Hills analyzed the small-scale spatial variability of groundwater seepage flux (q) and the ability of the meter to estimate mean q at larger scales. Results showed that streambed measurements perpendicular to streamflow are most representative due to larger seepage flux heterogeneity in this direction, guiding sampling practices to minimize redundancy. The study also demonstrated the viability of using a modest number of seepage meter measurements to determine overall groundwater flux to the stream, compared to traditional methods like bromide tracer dilution.

Characterizing Physical Properties of Streambed Interface Sediments Using In Situ Complex Electrical Conductivity Measurements

Chen Wang et al.

Summary: This study introduces a noninvasive method using complex electrical conductivity to characterize streambed sediment physical properties, demonstrating the sensitivity of imaginary conductivity to sediment surface area and validating the relationships through laboratory and field measurements. Results show that the inverted sediment imaginary conductivity is less impacted by uncertainty in water layer depth and conductivity compared to real conductivity, providing a more accurate assessment of sediment properties.

Geophysical mapping of hyporheic processes controlled by sedimentary architecture within compound bar deposits

Jeffery Tyler McGarr et al.

Summary: This study combined geophysical techniques with physical and chemical sediment analyses to investigate the influence of sedimentary architecture on hyporheic exchange dynamics within a compound bar deposit. Results from electromagnetic induction and time-lapse electrical resistivity imaging revealed variability in electrical conductivity and solute mixing dynamics within the compound bar.
