Temporal and spatial hydrological variations of the Yellow River in the past 60 years

Mengzhen Xu et al.

Summary: Understanding the variations in water and sediment of the Yellow River is crucial for managing its water resources and protecting its ecology in the future. This study analyzed the temporal and spatial changes in flow and sediment load based on 60 years of data. It proposed a new division scheme for the river and identified the key factors contributing to the variations, providing insights for river management strategies. The study found significant decreasing trends in flow and sediment load, except for certain reaches. Reservoir operations and water abstraction were found to influence the variations, and there were changes in the ratio of flood volume to annual flow and flood sediment load to annual sediment load.

Amplification of downstream flood stage due to damming of fine-grained rivers

Hongbo Ma et al.

Summary: This study finds that flood stage downstream of river dams can be amplified for moderate and large floods due to bed incision and sediment coarsening, which increase flow resistance and reduce velocity.

Perspectives on emerging pressures and their integrated impact on large river systems: An insight from the Yellow River basin

Durgesh Kumar Singh et al.

Summary: The Yellow River in China faces various emerging pressures, with water stress in the lower reach being the most concerning, primarily caused by reduced flow. Pollution and climate change also contribute to water stress. The study recommends the use of demand management approach and adaptive policy measures as alternative solutions to tackle the challenges presented by these emerging pressures.
