Occurrence, spatial distribution and ecological risks of antibiotics in soil in urban agglomeration

Summary: This study investigated the occurrence and spatial variability of antibiotics in soils in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei urban agglomeration, and assessed the ecological risks of antibiotics in soil environment. The results showed that land use, organic fertilizer and wastewater irrigation, soil properties, and land management policy significantly influenced the presence and concentration of antibiotics in soils. Erythromycin, sulfamethoxazole, and doxycycline were identified as high-risk antibiotics to soil ecosystem health.

Veterinary antibiotics can reduce crop yields by modifying soil bacterial community and earthworm population in agro-ecosystems

Summary: Veterinary antibiotics are widely used in animal farming and their presence in agroecosystems can have negative effects on soil bacteria, earthworms, and soil nutrients. This study found that veterinary antibiotics inhibit earthworm abundance, decrease bacterial diversity, and reduce soil nutrient availability. High-dose exposure to antibiotics also increases the abundance of plant pathogenic bacteria. The effects of antibiotics on crop yields are mediated by changes in soil microbes and earthworms, but the direct toxicity effects of antibiotics on crop yields are stronger. The tradeoffs between antibiotics and agroecosystem functions are dose-dependent.

Precipitation and soil pH drive the soil microbial spatial patterns in the Robinia pseudoacacia forests at the regional scale

Summary: This study investigated the spatial variation and drivers of microbial communities in Robinia pseudoacacia forests at the regional scale on the Loess Plateau. The results showed that soil bacteria and fungi exhibited a significant distance decay pattern, with fungi showing a more apparent spatial pattern than bacteria. Soil pH and mean annual precipitation were identified as the major drivers of community dissimilarity for bacteria and fungi, respectively.

Emission estimation and prioritization of veterinary pharmaceuticals in manure slurries applied to soil

Summary: This study assessed the sources and emissions of 17 potential concern veterinary pharmaceuticals (VPs) in the Netherlands. It was found that the administration quantities of almost all VPs to animals decreased from 2015 to 2018. The concentrations of VPs in slurry storage could decrease between 10% and 98%, depending on the compound. A residue indicator was developed based on the storage model outcomes, which correlated well with the most frequently detected VPs in Dutch slurries and could be used to prioritize measures in reducing VP emissions.

Summary: This study found a significant correlation between seasonal variability and soil antibiotic resistance gene (ARG) profiles, as well as a weak distance-decay relationship with geographic distances. Strong interactions were observed between specific soil ARGs and Actinobacteria, Firmicutes and Proteobacteria. The relative abundance of these bacteria correlated significantly with annual mean temperature and annual mean precipitation at a watershed scale.
