Untargeted Gut Metabolomics to Delve the Interplay between Selenium Supplementation and Gut Microbiota

Belen Callejon-Leblic et al.

Summary: In this study, the interaction between selenium intake, gut microbiota, and metabolites was investigated. Significant differences in gut metabolites were observed in mice after selenium supplementation, indicating the important effect of selenium on microbiota metabolism. The correlation analysis revealed associations between metabolites and gut bacterial profiles, with a higher abundance of Lactobacillus spp. associated with specific metabolite levels.

Effects of aquaculture waste feeds and antibiotics on marine benthic ecosystems in the Mediterranean Sea

Belen Gonzalez-Gaya et al.

Summary: Intensive aquaculture generates organic waste and antibiotics that impact the benthic ecosystems in the Mediterranean Sea. The study reveals that these substances alter sediment properties, accumulate in wild fauna, affect microbial communities, and contribute to antibiotic resistance genes. This research highlights the rapid alteration of habitat and biodiversity in Mediterranean benthic ecosystems due to aquaculture waste and antibiotic residues.

Impact of Contaminants on Microbiota: Linking the Gut-Brain Axis with Neurotoxicity

Jordina Balaguer-Trias et al.

Summary: In recent years, research has focused on the microbiota to establish a connection between neuronal health and intestinal imbalance. The microbiota is considered a critical regulator of the gut-brain axis, explained through neural, endocrine, and immune pathways. Daily exposure to contaminants affects the microbiota and disrupts the communication between the gut and brain, leading to neuronal disorders. The interplay between xenobiotics, microbiota, and neurotoxicity, especially in susceptible populations, remains poorly explored. Emerging in-silico models show promise in understanding this axis and preventing neurotoxicity.

Iodine deficiency disturbs the metabolic profile and elemental composition of human breast milk

A. Arias-Borrego et al.

Summary: The study found that several metabolites in the breast milk of iodine-deficient women were altered, affecting metabolic pathways such as lipid metabolism, amino acid cycle, the tricarboxylic acid cycle, and glycolysis. Additionally, the concentrations of selenium, zinc, and copper were significantly lower in the breast milk of iodine-deficient women.

Impact of fertilization with pig or calf slurry on antibiotic residues and resistance genes in the soil

Judith Huygens et al.

Summary: Antibiotic residues and antibiotic resistance genes can enter the environment through fertilization with animal manure. A longitudinal study found a significant increase in gene copy number of tet(M), erm(B), erm(F) and sul2 in soil after fertilization, and tet(B), tet(Q) and tet(L) were the least abundant genes. Multiple antibiotic residues were detected in soil and manure, and there was a positive association between the presence of antibiotic residues and antibiotic resistance genes in soil.

Selenium supplementation influences mice testicular selenoproteins driven by gut microbiota

Sara Ramirez-Acosta et al.

Summary: This study investigates the potential role of selenoproteins on gut microbiota and male reproductive health. A new assay for the quantification of selenoproteins in testicular tissue has been developed and applied. The study finds associations between testicular selenoproteins and gut microbiota, and demonstrates the significant impact of Se-supplementation on gut microbiota and male reproductive health.

Selenium Transport Mechanism via Selenoprotein P-Its Physiological Role and Related Diseases

Yoshiro Saito

Summary: SELENOP is a selenium-containing protein primarily produced in the liver, playing a pivotal role in selenium metabolism and antioxidative defense. It can reduce phospholipid hydroperoxides and deliver selenium to other tissues, but decreased or excessive levels can cause various dysfunctions. This review focuses on SELENOP's selenium transport system, molecular mechanism, and its biological significance.

Assessment of pharmaceutical mixture (ibuprofen, ciprofloxacin and flumequine) effects to the crayfish Procambarus clarkii: A multilevel analysis (biochemical, transcriptional and proteomic approaches)

Chiara Trombini et al.

Summary: Research has shown that exposure to mixtures of ciprofloxacin, flumequine, and ibuprofen can affect the hepatopancreas of Procambarus clarkii, leading to changes in protein abundance, gene expression, and enzyme activity. However, most of these effects were reversible after a depuration phase, indicating that the exposure did not cause permanent damage to the crayfish.

Impact of Antibiotic-Induced Depletion of Gut Microbiota and Selenium Supplementation on Plasma Selenoproteome and Metal Homeostasis in a Mice Model

Belen Callejon-Leblic et al.

Summary: Selenium has potential beneficial effects on gut microbiota, especially after antibiotic treatment, regulating microbiota diversity and richness, and increasing the relative abundance of some health-relevant taxa. This study also demonstrates the first associations between specific bacteria and plasma selenoproteins.
