A sparse optimal closure for a reduced-order model of wall-bounded turbulence

Zhao Chua Khoo et al.

Summary: In this study, several physics-informed and data-driven approaches are examined for the development of an accurate reduced-order model for turbulent plane Couette flow. The results show that combining the concept of optimal eddy-viscosity closure with sparse regression can more accurately approximate the dynamics of turbulence.

Exact Coherent States and the Nonlinear Dynamics of Wall-Bounded Turbulent Flows

Michael D. Graham et al.

Summary: Wall-bounded turbulence exhibits persistent patterns called coherent structures, which are important for transport processes. Recent research has focused on exact coherent states (ECS) in wall-bounded parallel flows, which are non-turbulent, nonlinear solutions resembling coherent structures in turbulence.

Nonlinear mechanism of the self-sustaining process in the buffer and logarithmic layer of wall-bounded flows

H. Jane Bae et al.

Summary: The study investigates the nonlinear mechanism in the self-sustaining process of wall-bounded turbulence using resolvent analysis, identifying that removing the principal forcing mode of the fundamental wavenumber can inhibit turbulence. The contributions to the principal forcing mode come from a limited set of wavenumber interactions.

Cause-and-effect of linear mechanisms sustaining wall turbulence

Adrian Lozano-Duran et al.

Summary: Despite the nonlinear nature of turbulence, evidence shows that part of the energy transfer mechanisms sustaining wall turbulence can be attributed to linear processes. Different scenarios based on linear stability theory, including exponential instabilities, neutral modes, transient growth from non-normal operators and parametric instabilities, are rooted in simplified physical models. Among these, transient growth has been shown to be sufficient for sustaining realistic wall turbulence, while suppressing other linear mechanisms such as exponential instabilities, neutral modes, and parametric instabilities.

Minimal multi-scale dynamics of near-wall turbulence

Patrick Doohan et al.

Summary: This study investigates the temporal dynamics of near-wall turbulent flow with two integral length scales of motion using a shear stress-driven flow model, revealing scale interaction processes and non-equilibrium turbulent dissipation dynamics. A new scale interaction process is identified where wall-normal energy transfer from large to small scales drives small-scale turbulent production.

Scaling of turbulence intensities up to Reτ=106 with a resolvent-based quasilinear approximation

Nikolaos Skouloudis et al.

Summary: A minimal form of quasilinear approximation (QLA) with stochastic forcing and proper orthogonal decomposition modes has been extended using a resolvent framework. The method aims to reach extremely high Reynolds numbers while maintaining general scaling properties in the spectra. However, there are limitations and accuracy concerns, along with the possibility of further improvement, in the proposed QLA.

Distributed vortex-wave interactions: the relation of self-similarity to the attached eddy hypothesis

Hugh M. Blackburn et al.

Summary: The study extends the large-Reynolds-number asymptotic reduction of the Navier-Stokes equations to describe the locally periodic vortex-wave array and the associated large-scale variation of the mean-shear velocity field. The sustaining process of locally periodic coherent structures is based on vortex-wave interaction theory, and the variation of mean velocity is achieved through a slow change to the mean profile.
