Energy transfer of hypersonic and high-enthalpy boundary layer instabilities and transition

Xianliang Chen et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the disturbance energy budget in hypersonic and high-enthalpy boundary layers with thermal-chemical nonequilibrium effects. The contribution from different terms is evaluated for the disturbance growth rate. The results show that the growth rates are mainly influenced by the production and viscous terms, with TCNE flow exhibiting differences in the second mode growth rate compared to the calorically perfect gas flow.

Ionization and dissociation effects on boundary-layer stability

Fernando Miro Miro et al.

Summary: This article examines the impact of high-enthalpy effects on boundary layer perturbation growth, finding that internal-energy-mode excitation, dissociation, and ionization lead to destabilization of the laminar base flow cooling, while species interdiffusion, dissociation, and ionization acting on perturbation terms have the opposite effect. Overall, internal-energy-mode excitation and dissociation are destabilizing, while ionization is stabilizing. The presence of unstable supersonic modes due to high-enthalpy effects is linked to diffusion-flux perturbations, rather than the cooling of the laminar base flow as commonly believed.

Direct numerical simulation of a hypersonic transitional boundary layer at suborbital enthalpies

M. Di Renzo et al.

Summary: The study analyzes a Mach-10 hypersonic boundary layer of air over a cold, isothermal wall using direct numerical simulations, focusing on chemical reactions and transition to turbulence. The boundary layer experiences dissociation due to viscous aerodynamic heating, leading to the production of oxygen, nitric oxide, and other chemical compounds.

Stationary cross-flow breakdown in a high-speed swept-wing boundary layer

Jianqiang Chen et al.

Summary: This study provides an in-depth analysis of the transition to full turbulence in high-speed cross-flows, revealing that the type-I secondary instability mode is crucial for the breakdown, while the traditional and new type-II secondary instability modes do not play a role in the process. The characteristics of high-speed cross-flow transition differ from those of low-speed cases, with the obtained three-dimensional turbulent boundary layer being inclined by a swept angle compared to the two-dimensional case.

Parabolized Stability Analysis of Hypersonic Thermal-Chemical Nonequilibrium Boundary-Layer Flows

Xianliang Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, the stability of Mach 20 flows past a 6 deg wedge in thermal-chemical nonequilibrium was investigated using linear parabolized stability equations. The results were verified against existing numerical data, showing good agreement particularly in the behavior of the supersonic mode disturbance. It was found that the stability of the flow is mainly influenced by the thermal-chemical nonequilibrium effect on mean flows rather than disturbances.

Receptivity and stability of hypersonic leading-edge sweep flows around a blunt body

Youcheng Xi et al.

Summary: This study obtained the characteristics of the leading attachment-line mode with sweep angle variations and successfully applied a bi-orthogonal eigenfunction system to address the receptivity problem of hypersonic flows. The analyses showed that global modes are most responsive to external forces and surface perturbations near the attachment line.

Secondary instability of the hypersonic high-enthalpy boundary layers with thermal-chemical nonequilibrium effects

Xianliang Chen et al.

Summary: The nonlinear analysis of high-enthalpy and hypersonic boundary-layer transition, focusing on the impacts of thermal-chemical nonequilibrium (TCNE), received less attention compared to linear instabilities. The study used numerical tools such as the nonlinear parabolized stability equation (NPSE) and the Floquet analysis (SIT) on flow over a blunt cone at Mach 20. Results showed that the fundamental resonance dominated over subharmonic resonance, with good agreement between solutions from SIT and NPSE. Disturbances in species mass and vibrational temperature were mainly generated by the product term of wall-normal velocity disturbance and mean-flow gradient, with noticeable rope-like structures near the boundary-layer edge. TCNE led to larger maximum secondary growth rate and corresponding azimuthal wavenumber in secondary instability.
