A review on recent developments in hydrodynamic cavitation and advanced oxidative processes for pretreatment of lignocellulosic materials

C. A. Prado et al.

Summary: This review critically discusses the importance of using lignocellulose biomass for the production of biofuels and biomolecules, as well as the challenges faced in industrial utilization. Innovative pretreatment strategies such as hydrodynamic cavitation and Advanced Oxidative Processes are proposed to reduce process time and chemical inputs.

Supersonic needle-jet generation with single cavitation bubbles

Fabian Reuter et al.

Summary: Researchers have successfully generated single laser-induced bubbles in an aqueous environment near a solid surface, leading to the formation of a needle jet that propagates at supersonic speeds exceeding 850m/s, an order of magnitude faster than regular jets observed in cavitation bubbles. This highly repeatable, localized flow phenomenon could be utilized for injection purposes or material processing, potentially generating significantly larger water hammer pressures.

The acoustic pressure generated by the cavitation bubble expansion and collapse near a rigid wall

Silvestre Roberto Gonzalez-Avila et al.

Summary: In this study, acoustic transients emitted during the collapse of laser-induced cavitation bubbles were analyzed systematically for different standoff parameters. Experimental and numerical results were used to investigate the impact of various parameters on the characteristics of the acoustic signals. It was found that the pressure peaks in the acoustic signals and the amplitude ratio of the first to second acoustic transients are related to the bubble nucleation place and the standoff parameter, gamma.

Study on characteristics of the cavitation bubble dynamics of lithium bromide aqueous solution with ultrasonic interaction

Zhaoning Hou et al.

Summary: This study examines the application of ultrasound heat-transfer enhancement technology in the generator of a solar absorption refrigeration system, finding that low-frequency ultrasound has a more significant effect on heat transfer in the vacuum generator. Additionally, increasing the number of ultrasonic vibrators can increase the maximum cavitation bubble radius, and transient cavitation can occur in the solution in the vacuum generator.

Crown formation from a cavitating bubble close to a free surface

Youssef Saade et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the formation mechanism of the crown is a combination of pressure distortion and induced flow focusing on the curved interface, as well as flow reversal caused by the second expansion of the toroidal bubble. A parametric study with control parameters such as Weber number, Reynolds number, pressure ratio, and dimensionless bubble distance to the free surface shows their effects on both the central jet and the crown formation. High Weber numbers lead to the formation of weaker 'secondary crowns', highly correlated with the third oscillation cycle of the bubble.

Cavitation-based pre-treatment of wastewater and waste sludge for improvement in the performance of biological processes: A review

Akash P. Bhat et al.

Summary: Cavitation-based pre-treatment processes can improve the efficiency of biological treatment, with notable benefits such as reduction in COD for wastewater and enhanced biodegradability index. Additionally, for sludge, it can lead to smaller particle sizes, increased soluble COD and disintegration, and higher biomethane production potential.
