Fundamental Fluid Dynamics Challenges in Inkjet Printing

Detlef Lohse

Summary: This review provides an overview of the fluid dynamics of inkjet printing and discusses the main challenges for present and future research. The challenges on the printhead side include the flow inside the printhead, bubble entrainment, meniscus dynamics, wetting phenomena, and jet formation. On the receiving substrate side, challenges include droplet impact, merging, wetting, evaporation, and drying. Optimizing the process and materials as a whole is crucial for achieving efficient inkjet printing.

The retraction of jetted slender viscoelastic liquid filaments

Uddalok Sen et al.

Summary: This study investigates the role of viscoelasticity in suppressing satellite droplets formation during inkjet printing. The results show that very dilute viscoelastic aqueous solutions can effectively suppress satellite droplets and there exist upper and lower bounds of polymer concentration within which satellite droplets are suppressed. Furthermore, the enhanced retraction velocity of filaments in between the two bounds is attributed to elastic tension due to polymer stretching.

The engulfment of aqueous droplets on perfectly wetting oil layers

Callum Cuttle et al.

Summary: Experiments showed that the process of droplet engulfment involves rapid submersion driven by capillary forces on the oil surface, followed by a slower peeling of the droplet from the interface. Both geometric constraints and gravity play essential roles in the completion of droplet engulfment. The longest engulfment times are observed for droplets of intermediate size due to the opposing effects of geometry and gravity.

Bursting bubble in a viscoplastic medium

Vatsal Sanjay et al.

Summary: In this study, the phenomenon of a rising bubble reaching the liquid-air interface in a yield-stress fluid was numerically investigated. Viscoplasticity was found to play a significant role in controlling the fate of capillary waves and their interaction at the bottom of the cavity, with the free surface converging to a non-flat equilibrium shape once the driving stresses fell below the yield stress. The dynamics and energy budgets of the flow were discussed, leading to the establishment of a regime map with four main regimes exhibiting different characteristic behaviors.

Surface tension and energy conservation in a moving fluid

Tomas Bohr et al.

Summary: The study analyzes the impact of surface tension on energy transport in moving fluids by tracking a control volume with specified velocity independently of flow velocity. It identifies a conservation equation for surface area and the mechanical conservation law for surface energy, highlighting the contributions of Laplace pressure and tangential surface tension forces.
