An amplitude equation modelling the double-crest swirling in orbital-shaken cylindrical containers

Alessandro Bongarzone et al.

Summary: Motion of a container along a planar circular trajectory at a constant angular velocity, known as orbital shaking, is important in various industrial applications such as fermentation processes and cultivation of stem cells. Previous experiments have shown that diverse dynamics, including the double-crest dynamics with a notably large amplitude response, can be observed under certain driving-frequency ranges due to the excitation of super-harmonics. In this study, a weakly nonlinear analysis is conducted to derive an amplitude equation describing the double-crest swirling motion, and the results are in good agreement with previous experiments.

Relaxation of capillary-gravity waves due to contact line nonlinearity: A projection method

Alessandro Bongarzone et al.

Summary: The physics-inspired mathematical model presented is based on successive linear eigenmode projections to address the relaxation of small-amplitude and two-dimensional viscous capillary-gravity waves, with a phenomenological nonlinear contact line model included. Each projection leads to a rapid loss of total energy in liquid motion and contributes to its nonlinear damping.

Jetting in finite-amplitude, free, capillary-gravity waves

Saswata Basak et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the mechanics of jet formation from capillary-gravity waves on a liquid pool surface in a cylindrical container, showing that linear theory is inadequate in describing the process. Nonlinear theory predicts energy transfer and numerical simulations reveal the jet originates from a small dimple at the wave trough. The theory qualitatively describes jet overshoot and liquid velocity/pressure fields, but does not capture the evolution of the dimple or the thinning of the jet neck leading to pinchoff.

On the role of meniscus geometry in capillary wave generation

X. Shao et al.

Summary: The experimental results demonstrate that the presence of a meniscus is necessary for the formation of capillary waves, while the lack of a meniscus prevents the formation of these waves. A meniscus of either positive or negative curvature serves equally well in enabling capillary wave formation.

Surface wave pattern formation in a cylindrical container

X. Shao et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the dynamics of surface waves excited by mechanical vibration in a cylindrical container, finding that control of the meniscus geometry had a significant effect on the generation and mixing of edge waves and Faraday waves. Theoretical predictions using the Rayleigh-Ritz procedure were in excellent agreement with experimental results.

Impinging planar jets: hysteretic behaviour and origin of the self-sustained oscillations

Alessandro Bongarzone et al.

Summary: The study investigates self-sustained oscillations induced by the interaction of two impinging jets in microfluidic devices, confirming a predominantly two-dimensional physical mechanism. Utilizing global stability analysis and weakly nonlinear theory, the research reveals hysteresis in the system within a certain aspect ratio range. The Kelvin-Helmholtz instability is identified as the main candidate for the observed oscillations in fluidic devices.
