Determination of groove shape with strong destabilization and low hydraulic drag

Nikesh Yadav et al.

Summary: This study investigates flow dynamics through a channel with plane, longitudinal grooves, focusing on drag reduction, hydrodynamic destabilization, and nonlinear flow solutions. Results show that longitudinal wall patterns lead to flow destabilization but improve mixing efficiency.

Further experiments and analysis on flow instability in eccentric annular channels

Marc-etienne Lamarche-Gagnon et al.

Summary: This study experimentally and numerically investigated the onset and physical patterns of gap instability in an eccentric annular channel, revealing that the characteristics of GI vary under different eccentricities and Reynolds numbers. Time-frequency analysis of velocity time histories showed different dominant modes for various eccentricities and Reynolds numbers.

Experimental measurements in plane Couette-Poiseuille flow: dynamics of the large- and small-scale flow

L. Klotz et al.

Summary: This paper experimentally investigates the transitional range of Reynolds numbers in plane Couette-Poiseuille flow and focuses on the localized turbulent structures and large-scale flow generated around them. The study shows how the amplitude of large-scale flow depends on Reynolds number and amplitude perturbation, and characterizes the initial dynamics of the turbulent spot and its interaction with the large-scale flow. Additionally, the paper provides the first experimental measurements of the large-scale flow around an oblique turbulent band.

Decay of streaks and rolls in plane Couette-Poiseuille flow

T. Liu et al.

Summary: An experimental investigation was conducted on the decay of turbulence in plane Couette-Poiseuille flow using 'quench' experiments. It was found that the decay of rolls in the spanwise velocity field is faster than the decay of streaks in the streamwise velocity field. The study also revealed a two-stage decay of streaks at final Reynolds numbers above 425, with the extrapolated value for the decay slope vanishing close to the value at which turbulence is self-sustained. Additionally, the decay rate of energy was found to increase linearly with Reynolds number, with an extrapolated value for the decay rate vanishing close to the self-sustained Reynolds number. Valuable information on the transition of turbulence can be obtained over a wide range of Reynolds numbers.

Flow destabilization and nonlinear solutions in low aspect ratio, corrugated duct flows

V. Pushenko et al.

Summary: This study investigates flows through narrow, rectangular ducts modified with grooves on top and bottom walls to reintroduce the linear destabilization mechanism and produce unstable modes in the form of waves at relatively low Reynolds numbers. The research concludes with a concise characterization of flow states resulting from amplification of unstable modes into the nonlinear regime.
