Pitanga (Eugenia uniflora L.) as a source of bioactive compounds for health benefits: A review

Eduarda Monteiro Fidelis et al.

Summary: The pitangueira, a tree native to Brazil, contains a diverse range of nutrients and bioactive compounds in its leaves and fruits. It has potential therapeutic effects in treating stomach and intestinal disorders, fever, and inflammation. Additionally, it exhibits antimicrobial, antiviral, anti-fungal, and antioxidant effects. Further studies are needed to establish its nutraceutical effects and uses for human health.

Anti-inflammatory, antinociceptive effects and involvement of opioid receptors in the antinociceptive activity of Eugenia uniflora leaves obtained with water, ethanol, and propylene glycol mixture

Glenda Laissa Oliveira de Melo Candeia et al.

Summary: Our study investigated the anti-inflammatory and analgesic activities of spray-dried extract and fractions from Eugenia uniflora leaves using in vivo pharmacological models in mice. The results suggest that the extract and ethyl acetate fraction exhibit peripheral and central antinociceptive activity, which may be related to the presence of flavonoids, mainly myricitrin, and the involvement of opioid receptors.

Ageratina adenophora Inhibits Spleen Immune Function in Rats via the Loss of the FRC Network and Th1-Th2 Cell Ratio Elevation

Zhihua Ren et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of Ageratina adenophora on splenic immune function in rats. It found that A. adenophora led to a decrease in CD3(+) T cells, chemokine expression, and an imbalance in Th1/Th2 cell ratios in the spleen, indicating potential immunotoxicity. These findings suggest that A. adenophora alters the FRC network and affects immune function in the spleen.

A Review of the Toxicity and Phytochemistry of Medicinal Plant Species Used by Herbalists in Treating People Living With HIV/AIDS in Uganda

G. Anywar et al.

Summary: Most of the plant species lack detailed phytochemical analyses and quantification of their constituents, with crude plant extracts being the most commonly used. Different solvents were used for extraction and cytotoxicity varied with cell type, solvent, and extract type, making direct comparison difficult. Some plant extracts have potential as anticancer or anti-tumour drugs, but more toxicological studies in animals and humans are needed.
