Contribution of redox-active properties of compost-derived humic substances in hematite bioreduction

Chao Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the redox capacities of compost-derived humic substances (HS) and their impact on the hematite bioreduction. The results showed that compost-derived HS could promote the bioreduction of hematite and their redox capacities increased during composting. The aromatic functional groups and heteroatom structures, particularly nitrogen, were found to be important for the hematite bioreduction.

Acceleration mechanism of bioavailable Fe(III) on Te(IV) bioreduction of Shewanella oneidensis MR-1: Promotion of electron generation, electron transfer and energy level

Yue He et al.

Summary: The addition of Fe(III) increased the bioreduction rate of Te(IV) and enhanced NADH production, cytochrome c levels, and extracellular polymeric substances secretion while reducing cell membrane permeability, subsequently reducing the toxicity of Te(IV) to cells. Additionally, Fe(III) also facilitated ATP production, providing energy for the metabolic process of Te(IV) bioreduction and playing a crucial role in cell activity. Zeta potential and FT-IR spectra indicated that the stability of TeNPs was improved by the presence of EPS, offering a promising strategy for enhancing the stability of TeNPs.

Mechanistic insights into organic carbon-driven water blackening and odorization of urban rivers

Zhiwei Liang et al.

Summary: Rapid global urbanization is causing severe pollution of urban rivers through massive anthropogenic inputs of organic matter and inorganic nutrients, leading to changes in the structure and function of aquatic microbial communities. Organic carbon is identified as a key parameter driving water blackening and odorization, as well as the enrichment of emerging pathogens in urban river microbial communities. The study provides mechanistic insight into the phenomenon and raises questions about current remediation strategies for urban aquatic ecosystems.

A collaborative effect of algae-bacteria symbiotic and biological activated carbon system on black odorous water pretreated by UV photolysis

Xiaoyan Wang et al.

Summary: UV photolysis was used as pretreatment to degrade black odorous water, followed by the application of algae-bacteria symbiotic system combined with biologically activated carbon technology for further degradation. The addition of sodium acetate promoted the proliferation of microalgae and bacteria, enhancing the degradation effect of microorganisms. Indoor-scale column study showed that the combined treatment achieved a COD removal efficiency of 83 +/- 1 %, indicating its potential for practical application in water treatment.

Humic acids promote hydroxyl radical production during transformation of biogenic and abiogenic goethite under redox fluctuation

Huali Yu et al.

Summary: This study shows that the presence of humic acids can enhance the generation of hydroxyl radicals during the anoxic-oxic transition, particularly in biogenic goethite systems. Adsorbed Fe(II) plays a significant role in the generation of hydroxyl radicals. Additionally, the generation of hydroxyl radicals can lead to changes in the molecular weight and composition of humic acids, providing insights into biogeochemical cycles and in-situ remediation at anoxic-oxic interfaces.
