Charity hazard and the flood insurance protection gap: An EU scale assessment under climate change

Summary: The flood insurance protection gap, caused by uninsured flood risk, is a growing issue in many European countries. Charity hazard, where private insurance uptake is crowded out due to expectations of government compensation, plays a significant role in this gap. The extent of charity hazard decreases with uncertainty of government compensation and higher flood risk, with the highest impact observed in regions of Germany and Italy. The projected insurance protection gap is highest in Germany, Spain, Poland and Italy, and is expected to continue growing towards 2050.

Topographical Characteristics of Frequent Inland Water Flooding Areas in Tangerang City, Indonesia

Summary: The study used statistical analyses and GIS computations to examine frequent inland water flooding areas in Tangerang city from 2008 to 2015. Results showed correlations between frequent inland water flooding areas and slope, concave and flow length conditions, slope condition and distance to a river, as well as the relationship between flow length in upstream characteristics and distance to a pond. The method correctly identified 71% of frequent inland water flooding areas and highlighted the importance of understanding topographical similarity in flood risk assessment.
