Distribution, risk assessment, and source apportionment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) using positive matrix factorization (PMF) in urban soils of East India

Balram Ambade et al.

Summary: This study investigated the characteristics and sources of PAHs in urban soils from two industrial cities in east India and assessed their health risks to humans. The results showed that HMW PAHs (4-5 rings) were predominant, with major sources of contamination being petroleum combustion, vehicular emissions, biomass, and coal combustion. The health risk assessment indicated some carcinogenic risk for adults, although the cumulative probability of carcinogenic risks was generally within acceptable limits.

Yan Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the occurrence and temporal variations in the fluxes and compositions of n-alkanes and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAHs) in sediment cores from a small catchment in western Dianchi lake, China. The results showed the ongoing organic contamination from inputs to outputs, highlighting the influence of agricultural and industrial economy on the catchment outlets.

North-south geographic heterogeneity and control strategies for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Chinese lake sediments illustrated by forward and backward source apportionments

Xionghu Gong et al.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the geographic heterogeneity of PAHs in lake sediments in China and found differences in PAH levels and sources between the north and south. Petroleum from transport was the dominant source of PAHs in the south, while domestic coal was the main source in the north. Strategies such as purifying fuels, promoting new energy vehicles, and improving coal quality can effectively reduce PAH emissions.

Multimedia distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the Wang Lake Wetland, China

Changhe Shi et al.

Summary: The study found that the concentration of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the Wang Lake Wetland increased significantly after the rainy season, while the concentration of dissolved phase PAHs remained stable. It was also determined that petrogenic derived compounds are the main source of PAHs in the wetland. During high-flow periods, PAH distribution and transport become more complex, and temperature-driven changes may release high molecular weight PAHs from sediment.

Distribution, sources, and ecological risk assessment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the sediments of Daihai Lake in Inner Mongolia, China

Yuwei Sun et al.

Summary: This study investigated the contamination level, composition pattern, and sources of PAHs in Daihai Lake in Inner Mongolia, China, and assessed the ecological risk of these pollutants. The results showed low levels of PAHs in surface sediments, primarily originating from domestic coal combustion and industry, potentially causing occasional adverse effects on aquatic organisms.

Modern lake sedimentary record of PAHs and OCPs in a typical karst wetland, south China: Response to human activities and environmental changes

Cheng Cheng et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the concentrations of PAHs and OCPs in the sediment core from Huixian Lake were influenced by both regional socio-economic development and environmental changes in the wetland. Total organic carbon (TOC) content was identified as the dominant factor explaining the concentrations of PAHs and OCPs, with karstification potentially playing a key role in their migration.

Xiaohua Ma et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the influencing factors and sources of historical changes in polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the sediment core of Fuxian Lake. Different sources and factors have varying impacts on PAHs before 1970, during 1971-2004, and 2005-2017.

The consecutive lake group water storage variations and their dynamic response to climate change in the central Tibetan Plateau

Run Zhang et al.

Summary: The study found that the water storage of seven lakes in the central Tibetan Plateau has increased over the past few decades, mainly influenced by temperature and precipitation. There is a correlation between lake water storage variations and climate change, and there is a lag time in response to precipitation.

Emerging water pollution in the world's least disturbed lakes on Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau

Yue Wu et al.

Summary: The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau Lake Region in China has the largest abundance and size distribution of lakes, but the water quality has deteriorated due to climate change and intensified human activities, leading to eutrophication. The vulnerability of the lakes to human activities is influenced by intrinsic characteristics and climate change, with accelerated urbanization and economic development playing a role in water pollution events. Immediate measures are necessary to prevent irreversible consequences and ensure good water quality in the region.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in sedimentary cores of Tibetan Plateau: Influence of global warming on cold trapping*

An-Ting Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that during "hot anomaly" periods, the atmospheric deposition concentrations of PAHs were relatively low, indicating that high temperatures might restrict PAHs deposition. As temperatures continue to rise on the Tibetan Plateau, there are different effects of rising temperatures on low molecular weight PAHs and high molecular weight PAHs, suggesting that the impact of global warming on the environmental fate of POPs cannot be ignored.

Xionghu Gong et al.

Summary: This study investigated the spatial distribution and sediment record of persistent toxic substances (PTS) in urban lake sediments in the middle Yangtze River Basin, showing pollution concentration in certain areas due to inputs from petrochemical and municipal wastewaters. The sediment record revealed an increase in PTS concentrations over decades, followed by a decrease likely due to wastewater treatment plant improvements.
