Ultra-small cobalt nanoparticles embedded into N-doped hierarchical porous carbon derived from Ion-Exchange MOFs as high-efficient bifunctional catalysts for rechargeable Zn-air battery

Summary: In this study, a novel cobalt-ion-exchange and pyrolysis strategy was used to prepare a highly efficient bifunctional electrocatalyst with excellent electrocatalytic activity and stability. The bifunctional electrocatalyst, named Co@N-HPC-800, was embedded with ultra-small cobalt nanoparticles in N-doped hierarchical porous carbon. The Co@N-HPC-800 showed outstanding performance in alkaline conditions, surpassing the commercial Pt/C + RuO2 electrocatalysts. Furthermore, the Co@N-HPC-800 cathode exhibited good flexibility and stability in a flexible quasi-solid-state Zn-air battery.

Designing superior bifunctional electrocatalyst with high-purity pyrrole-type CoN4 and adjacent metallic cobalt sites for rechargeable Zn-air batteries

Summary: In this study, a high-performance bifunctional electrocatalyst consisting of high-purity pyrrole nitrogen anchored cobalt single-atom (CoN4) and adjacent metallic cobalt sites (Co-p @CoNC) was developed. The catalyst exhibited superior electrocatalytic activity for both oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Experimental results and theoretical simulations revealed that the pyrrole-type CoN4 and adjacent metallic cobalt sites were separately decisive active sites for ORR and OER activities. Additionally, metallic cobalt regulated the electron distribution of CoN4 moiety to improve ORR activity. Importantly, the rechargeable Zn-air batteries using this catalyst demonstrated high peak power densities.
