The 2/3 scaling of twig nitrogen to phosphorus in woody plants

Zhiqiang Wang et al.

Summary: This study analyzed a comprehensive dataset of 2,038 N=P paired observations for 536 woody species to determine the scaling relationship of N to P in twigs. The results showed a uniform 2/3-power scaling relationship across different functional groups and biomes. The numerical value of the scaling exponent varied across different sites but converged to 0.67 with increasing sample sizes. The study provides important parameters for stoichiometric growth models and has implications for predicting nutrient cycling in terrestrial ecosystems.

Varied nitrogen versus phosphorus scaling exponents among shrub organs across eastern China

Mengying Zhao et al.

Summary: The scaling exponent of nitrogen (N) vs. phosphorus (P) varies among different shrub organs due to influences from plant functional groups (PFGs), climate zones, soil nutrient status, and habitats. Stems and coarse roots show a resistant response to nutrient limitation and a compliant response to high nutrient availability. Leaves and fine roots are mainly controlled by soil P and N availability, regardless of PFGs.

Global synthesis for the scaling of soil microbial nitrogen to phosphorus in terrestrial ecosystems

Zhiqiang Wang et al.

Summary: Nitrogen and phosphorus are crucial elements associated with the life history of organisms, and soil microbes play significant roles in nutrient cycling and ecosystem dynamics. This study analyzed microbial C, N, and P concentrations and ratios on a global scale, revealing variations within and across different ecosystems and spatial scales. The scaling exponent of microbial N versus P differed significantly across spatial scales, with soil total P identified as a key contributor to this variation.

Plant Nutrient Contents Rather Than Physical Traits Are Coordinated Between Leaves and Roots in a Desert Shrubland

Xiaoyan Jiang et al.

Summary: The study found that leaf and fine-root traits of desert plants partially align with the global leaf economics spectrum (LES) theory, but fine-root traits do not exhibit a leaf-trait syndrome. Functional traits related to nutrient allocation and use are coordinated between leaves and fine roots in desert ecosystems, with differences observed among functional groups.

Divergent scaling of fine-root nitrogen and phosphorus in different root diameters, orders and functional categories: A meta-analysis

Zhiqiang Wang et al.

Summary: Fine-root nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations play a crucial role in nutrient cycling in terrestrial ecosystems. Research shows that the scaling relationships between N and P vary significantly within and across different fine-root classification groups, particularly in absorptive roots. These results highlight the importance of carefully considering fine-root classification when predicting plant growth and vegetation productivity.

An integrated framework of plant form and function: the belowground perspective

Alexandra Weigelt et al.

Summary: This study integrates root traits into the global framework of plant form and function and finds that an integrated whole-plant trait space requires up to four axes, with two main axes representing the fast-slow 'conservation' gradient and the 'collaboration' gradient in roots, providing a more comprehensive understanding of the multidimensional nature of plant trait variation.
