Testing General Relativity with black hole X-ray data: a progress report

Cosimo Bambi

Summary: Einstein's theory of General Relativity, a pillar of modern physics, has been mainly tested in the weak field regime for decades, but recent years have seen significant progress in testing the theory in the strong field regime with black holes and neutron stars data.

Testing the Kerr Black Hole Hypothesis with GRS 1716-249 by Combining the Continuum Fitting and the Iron-line Methods

Zuobin Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, the spins of black holes were measured using the continuum-fitting and the iron-line methods, and three NuSTAR observations of the black hole binary GRS 1716-249 were analyzed. The analysis confirmed the Kerr nature of the black hole in GRS 1716-249 and provided stringent constraints on possible deviations from the predictions of general relativity.

Reflection Spectra of Accretion Disks Illuminated by Disk-like Coronae

Shafqat Riaz et al.

Summary: This article investigates the impact of a disk-like corona on the measurement of system properties and testing the Kerr nature of a black hole by simulating observations of a black hole binary. The study finds that while the astrophysical properties of the accretion disk can be well recovered, it is more challenging to constrain the geometric properties of the black hole spacetime.

Testing the Kerr black hole hypothesis with the continuum-fitting and the iron line methods: the case of GRS 1915+105

Ashutosh Tripathi et al.

Summary: In this study, the hypothesis of Kerr black hole was tested with a stellar-mass black hole in GRS 1915+105 by analyzing five disk-dominated RXTE spectra and one reflection-dominated Suzaku spectrum. The combination of the constraints from the continuum-fitting and the iron line methods has the potential to provide more stringent tests of the Kerr metric.

Are parametrized tests of general relativity with gravitational waves robust to unknown higher post-Newtonian order effects?

Scott Perkins et al.

Summary: Gravitational wave observations have potential to reveal fundamental nature of gravity, but extracting information is challenging. Techniques like parametrized inspiral tests are widely used, and single-parameter tests in general relativity are robust.

Parametrized tests of post-Newtonian theory using principal component analysis

M. Saleem et al.

Summary: Searching for deviations from general relativity (GR) beyond one post-Newtonian (PN) phasing coefficients, known as a multiparameter test, is not effective with the current sensitivity of gravitational-wave detectors. However, principal component analysis (PCA) can address this issue by constructing linear combinations of PN parameters that are better constrained by gravitational-wave observations. By analyzing binary black hole events detected during the first and second observing runs of LIGO/Virgo, the study shows that two dominant principal components can capture the essence of a multiparameter test. Moreover, using simulated non-GR signals, the method is capable of excluding GR with high confidence and recovering the injected values of the non-GR parameters with good precision.

A Reflection Model with a Radial Disk Density Profile

Askar B. Abdikamalov et al.

Summary: In this paper, we introduce a relativistic reflection model with a radial electron density gradient and nonconstant ionization parameter profile. We demonstrate the impact of implementing electron density gradient by analyzing a NuSTAR spectrum and conducting a simulation with Athena and eXTP. The new model shows improved fitting results in NuSTAR spectrum, and the absence of a disk density profile affects the testing of spacetime metric around compact objects.

Strong gravitational lensing by rotating Simpson-Visser black holes

Shafqat Ul Islam et al.

Summary: The study focuses on strong field gravitational lensing by rotating Simpson-Visser black holes and distinguishes them quantitatively from Kerr black holes via gravitational lensing effects. The research discusses the astrophysical consequences in supermassive black holes and finds deviations in lensing observables which may not be resolved by current observations but could be determined with future observations. The study also presents a two-dimensional lens equation and formula for deflection angle in the strong field limit.

Impact of the Returning Radiation on the Analysis of the Reflection Spectra of Black Holes

Shafqat Riaz et al.

Summary: This paper studies the impact of returning radiation on relativistic reflection spectra from black hole accretion disks, finding systematic uncertainties in measurement properties when neglecting returning radiation; NICER simulations show overestimation of disk inclination and black hole spin parameter at low viewing angles, with no bias at high viewing angles, and consistent iron abundance estimation. In extreme cases, returning radiation flattens radial emissivity and produces uncompensated residuals, potentially affecting interpretation of data from future X-ray missions. NuSTAR observations above 10 keV show different conclusions from NICER simulations, such as the ability to obtain a high iron abundance.

A novel family of rotating black hole mimickers

Jacopo Mazza et al.

Summary: With the recent introduction of gravitational wave astronomy, discussion about black hole mimickers has shifted from theoretical to phenomenological. In the absence of a definitive quantum gravity theory, the appeal of using simple metageometries to describe alternative phenomenologically viable scenarios is significant. The metric proposed by Simpson and Visser provides an example of such meta-geometry, allowing for the description of different non-rotating black hole mimickers for varying values of a single parameter.
