Nitric Oxide-Releasing Lock Solution for the Prevention of Catheter-Related Infection and Thrombosis

Morgan Ashcraft et al.

Summary: This study reports the development of a dual-functional lock therapy using a nitric oxide donor molecule, S-nitrosoglutathione, to prevent infection and thrombosis associated with venous catheters. The therapy outperforms traditional antibiotic lock solutions in preventing catheter infections and also inhibits clot formation. It has excellent potential for safely and effectively reducing complications related to catheter usage.

Tailoring nitric oxide release with additive manufacturing to create antimicrobial surfaces

Manjyot Kaur Chug et al.

Summary: The study aims to develop bioactive polymers customized to prevent bacterial infections by combining additive manufacturing technology and the antimicrobial properties of nitric oxide (NO). The research successfully fabricated NO-releasing biocompatible polymer interfaces with tunable NO-release and demonstrated >99% reduction of viable bacteria on the surface. This combination of 3D-printing technology with NO-releasing properties shows promise in developing customized medical devices with enhanced antimicrobial properties and biocompatibility.
