Younes Hamed et al.

Summary: This study introduces new data on cancer patients and the general population in the Gafsa region. The results show that breast cancer is the most frequent type among both sexes, while prostate cancer ranks second for males. The proximity of mine areas is identified as an exacerbating factor for cancer morbidity in the studied area.

Ecological risk assessment of heavy metal-contaminated soil using the triad approach

Young Kyu Hong et al.

Summary: The study applied a tiered Triad approach to assess site-specific ecological risk in heavy metal-contaminated soil, determining the necessity of remediation based on risk levels. Chemical aspects were found to have a greater impact on risk evaluation compared to toxicological and ecological aspects. The study highlights the importance of thorough site-specific evaluation and the potential usefulness of the triad approach in managing heavy metals in soil.

Polluted brownfield site converted into a public urban park: A place providing ecosystem services or a hidden health threat?

Vaclav Pecina et al.

Summary: The study found that the soil of urban parks newly established in reclaimed areas of historic mining towns is heavily polluted, posing potential health risks to children, especially with high levels of heavy metals such as As, Cd, Pb, and Zn. In addition, park vegetation is also affected by soil phytotoxicity, indicating that heavily polluted brownfield sites with historic mining-related activities may not be suitable for establishing urban parks even after reclamation.

Soil remediation approach and bacterial community structure in a long-term contaminated soil by a mining spill (Aznalcollar, Spain)

M. Paniagua-Lopez et al.

Summary: The Aznalcollar accident in 1998 caused significant pollution with pyritic sludge and acidic water in the south of Spain. Soil remediation techniques involving liming or biopile treatments were effective in reducing the solubility of heavy metals and toxicity in the contaminated soils. The microbial community abundance and structure in the CT soils were significantly different compared to the other soils, with higher levels of total bacteria and archaea found in the recuperated and amended soils.

Bioavailability Assessment of Heavy Metals Using Various Multi-Element Extractants in an Indigenous Zinc Smelting Contaminated Site, Southwestern China

Jun-Xian Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the risks posed by toxic heavy metals in indigenous zinc smelting contaminated soil, using bioavailability, speciation, and release kinetics as tools for risk assessment. The results showed that Cd, Pb, and Zn were the most mobile elements, posing potential environmental risks.
