Effect of deformation and grain size on austenite decomposition during quenching and partitioning of (high) silicon-aluminum steels

P. K. Kantanen et al.

Summary: The study describes the effect of austenite deformation on carbon partitioning and transformation to athermal and isothermal martensite, and bainite during quenching and partitioning (QP). It was found that deformation close to the no-recrystallization temperature refines the grain size, lowers the martensite start temperature and affects the stability of austenite during QP processing. These results can help in designing optimal QP treatments for these novel steels by corroborating the QP microstructures and their hardness through dilatation measurements and retained austenite contents at room temperature.

On the role of grain size on slurry erosion behavior of a novel medium-carbon, low-alloy pipeline steel after induction hardening

Vahid Javaheri et al.

Summary: Grain refinement is widely used to improve the hardness and toughness properties of metallic materials. However, the impact of prior austenite grain refinement on the final martensitic microstructure and wear performance of steels is not fully understood. The study found that within a certain range of achieved prior austenite grain size, the final martensitic microstructures showed only slight differences in block size and hardness levels, which affected work hardening behavior and wear mechanisms during testing.

Ultrahigh-strength steels at elevated temperatures

Lassi Keranen et al.

Summary: This research aims to investigate the usage of compression loaded ultrahigh-strength steel components at elevated temperatures and provide design guidelines. Tensile test data for S700 and S960 ultrahigh-strength steels revealed that their capacities against buckling are weaker than assumed at elevated temperatures.
