Fast training of deep LSTM networks with guaranteed stability for nonlinear system modeling

Wen Yu et al.

Summary: This study introduces a faster training method by separating the LSTM cell into forward and recurrent models, while modifying the deep LSTM through the combination of deep RNN and MLP. The stability of the backpropagation-like training methods for deep RNN and MLP training is demonstrated, with simulation results showing the superiority of the fast training methods for LSTM over conventional approaches.

Deep Data Assimilation: Integrating Deep Learning with Data Assimilation

Rossella Arcucci et al.

Summary: Deep Data Assimilation (DDA) integrates Data Assimilation (DA) with Machine Learning (ML), using a trained recurrent neural network to learn the assimilation process and reduce model error. The effectiveness of DDA is validated through examples and sensitivity studies, demonstrating improved prediction accuracy without the need for data assimilation.

Economic footprint of California wildfires in 2018

Daoping Wang et al.

Summary: This study found that the economic damage of California wildfires in 2018 accounted for roughly 1.5% of California's annual gross domestic product, with different proportions of capital losses, health costs, and indirect losses. The research highlights the indirect impacts of wildfires on the economy and emphasizes the actions that decision makers need to take to reduce the losses caused by future wildfires.

Fifty years of wildland fire science in Canada

Sean C. P. Coogan et al.

Summary: The paper celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Canadian Journal of Forest Research and reflects on the significant progress made in Canadian wildland fire science over the past half century. It discusses key developments in areas such as the Canadian Forest Fire Danger Rating System, the relationships between wildland fire and weather, climate, and climate change, fire ecology, operational decision support, and wildland fire management. Future directions for Canadian wildland fire research are also explored, including the evaluation of fire severity measurements and effects, the efficacy of fuel management treatments, and the integration of forest management and ecological restoration with wildland fire risk reduction. Throughout the paper, contributions from the Canadian Journal of Forest Research are referenced as being at the forefront of international wildland fire science.

Observation data compression for variational assimilation of dynamical systems (R)

Sibo Cheng et al.

Summary: Accurate estimation of error covariances is crucial for efficient observation compression approaches in data assimilation. A new combination of covariance tuning algorithm and existing PCA-type data compression approaches is proposed to reduce computational cost in real-time updating. The method is validated on a shallow water twin experiment and applied to a challenging industrial hydrological model.
