A phase inversion benchmark for multiscale multiphase flows

J-L Estivalezes et al.

Summary: A series of benchmarks based on the physical situation of phase inversion between two immiscible liquids is presented, aiming at progressing towards the direct numerical simulation of two-phase flows. Several CFD codes developed in French laboratories are used to provide physical solutions, convergence studies, and code comparisons to probe the physics of the problem and validate the physical relevance of the simulations.

A Local Curvature Based Adaptive Particle Level Set Method

Cheng Wang et al.

Summary: This work presents an adaptive particle reseeding method for the particle level set method based on local curvature, achieving higher efficiency by placing more particles near interfaces with larger curvature. The method also includes a correction procedure with grid independence. Numerical tests demonstrate improved area/volume conservation and computational efficiency compared to the original method, with a CPU time savings of 50-75% without sacrificing accuracy.

Breakup of thin liquid sheets through hole-hole and hole-rim merging

G. G. Agbaglah

Summary: Three-dimensional numerical simulations were conducted to investigate the dynamics of liquid bridge formation during the merging of two distinct holes (hole-hole) and a single hole with a straight rim (hole-rim). The results showed that the mid-plane diameter of the liquid bridge decreases linearly with time for the hole-rim case and quadratically for the hole-hole case, forming a cylindrical ligament that can either detach or merge into a single large drop. This process was further characterized by the power-law relationship between the size of the formed drop and the initial liquid sheet thickness.

Three-dimensional dynamics of a pair of deformable bubbles rising initially in line. Part 1. Moderately inertial regimes

Jie Zhang et al.

Summary: Highly resolved simulations were used to study the buoyancy-driven motion of two identical gas bubbles released in a liquid at rest. Two distinct evolutions were observed depending on the values of Galilei (Ga) and Bond (Bo) numbers, with the bubbles either moving in a side-by-side motion or with the trailing bubble drifting laterally. Bubble deformation played a key role in determining the system's evolution.
