Identifying active concentrations of biopolymers for enhancing membrane nanofiltration performance: From bench-scale tests to real production considerations

Zhaoyang Su et al.

Summary: In the last decades, membrane-based nanofiltration (NF) technique has been widely applied for safe and high-quality drinking water production worldwide. However, high operation cost and membrane fouling remain significant challenges. This study proposes an optimized design for membrane-based NF plants inspired by natural biopolymers present in the feed water. The findings suggest that biopolymers can alleviate membrane fouling and improve effluent quality within a certain concentration range, providing valuable insights for more energy-efficient NF technology.

Contribution of bacterial extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) in surface water purification

Weihua Li et al.

Summary: The study investigated the self-purification of surface water by dominant bacteria under different environmental conditions, with results showing that bacteria and EPS from polluted sources have a stronger flocculation ability due to polysaccharides, networked structure, and lack of hydrophilic groups in EPS. Different microbial community structures can enhance the water body's ability to remove environmental pollutants like SS, humic acid, and fulvic acid.

Importance of origin and characteristics of biopolymers in reversible and irreversible fouling of ultrafiltration membranes

Xing Zheng et al.

Summary: This study compared the chemical properties and fouling potential of biopolymers extracted from secondary wastewater effluent and surface water during ultrafiltration. It was found that EfOM biopolymers were enriched in protein structures and caused more irreversible fouling compared to NOM biopolymers. Additionally, the presence of divalent cations increased the irreversibility of fouling, with a more significant impact on NOM fouling.
