In situ sorption phenomena can mitigate potential negative environmental effects of underground coal gasification (UCG) - an experimental study of phenol removal on UCG-derived residues in the aspect of contaminant retardation

Aleksandra Strugala-Wilczek et al.

Summary: The study investigates the sorption interactions between phenol and materials obtained from different UCG simulations, finding high removal efficiency for phenol and varying sorption characteristics in different UCG processes. The isotherm models were used to describe the adsorption phenomena, and the results suggest significant delay in the migration of organic pollutants in the environment around UCG reactors.

A numerical investigation into the environmental impact of underground coal gasi fi cation technology based on a coupled thermal-hydro-chemical model

Ni An et al.

Summary: This study improves understanding of potential environmental impact of underground coal gasification by investigating the transport of gaseous and dissolved chemicals in surrounding strata. Results show gas propagation is limited by geological characteristics, and selecting the right coal seam can minimize gas losses and avoid negative environmental impact during operation and decommissioning stages.

Environmental evaluation study of toxic elements (F, Zn, Be, Ni, Ba, U) in the underground coal gasification (UCG) residuals

Weiping Ma et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the chemical forms and transformation mechanism of toxic elements in underground coal gasification residuals through sequential chemical extraction and thermodynamic equilibrium calculation, and studies the risk level of toxic elements to the underground environment. Results show that certain toxic elements decrease their harmful degree to the underground environment with the rise of reaction temperature, indicating that the underground residuals reach stability at a reaction temperature of 1200 degrees C.

Enabling large-scale hydrogen storage in porous media - the scientific challenges

Niklas Heinemann et al.

Summary: This article identifies the scientific challenges of large-scale underground hydrogen storage in porous media, highlighting the safety and economic impacts triggered by poorly understood key processes. Despite the vast opportunities provided by UHSP, its maturity is considered low, requiring multidisciplinary research to achieve safe, efficient and much-needed large-scale commercial deployment.
