Coupled thermal-hydraulic-mechanical model for an enhanced geothermal system and numerical analysis of its heat mining performance

Luming Zhou et al.

Summary: The study explains the thermal-hydraulic-mechanical coupling mechanism in an enhanced geothermal system (EGS) reservoir and establishes a fully coupled mathematical model, verified through an example. Numerical simulations are used to study heat transfer, fluid flow, and mechanical characteristics in a geothermal reservoir over 40 years, with analysis on the effects of fractures, coupling conditions, and model parameters on mining performance. The results show that the dual-media model can reflect anisotropy in temperature, pressure, and stress due to fractures, providing insights for optimizing EGS mining efficiency.

Analyzes of thermal characteristics of a hydrothermal coaxial closed-loop geothermal system in a horizontal well

Gaosheng Wang et al.

Summary: This study focuses on developing a geothermal system using a horizontal-well to exploit deep hydrothermal resources, considering the complex convection process in the reservoir. The results show that forced convection can greatly enhance heat transfer, emphasizing the importance of factors such as horizontal length, permeability, and reverse circulation in improving heat extraction. Compared to vertical well systems, horizontal-well systems can fully extract heat stored in the reservoir, providing valuable insights for scientific research and engineering applications.

Summary: The study optimized well placement in doublet well systems in the Gonghe Basin, China, considering the natural hydro-thermal flow system. Intensive well placement was found to be more effective than extensive well placement, resulting in higher outflow temperatures and lower groundwater level changes. This approach provides important insights for large-scale geothermal exploitation in other geothermal fields.
