Application of lignin in preparation of slow-release fertilizer: Current status and future perspectives

Jiajun Lu et al.

Summary: Lignin, the most abundant renewable aromatic resource on Earth, is being utilized for producing bioproducts to support sustainable development. Studies on lignin-based slow-release fertilizer have increased due to its excellent properties in releasing nutrients slowly. By either physically impeding or chemically modifying the nutrients, lignin-based slow-release fertilizers are able to effectively release nutrients, promoting resource utilization and environmental protection.

Formation of Humic-Like Substances during the Technological Process of Lignohumate® Synthesis as a Function of Time

Olga Yakimenko et al.

Summary: The study examined the composition, structure, and biological activity of humic-like substances synthesized during the production of Lignohumate. It was found that LH samples can be divided into three groups based on synthesis duration, with maximum biological activity reached after 45-60 minutes, indicating that further synthesis beyond this point does not add value to the humic product.

Agronomic Assessment of a Controlled-Release Polymer-Coated Urea-Based Fertilizer in Maize

Ricardo Gil-Ortiz et al.

Summary: This study compared the efficacy of a new ecological polymer-coated urea fertilizer with a traditional slow-release urea-based fertilizer, finding that the new controlled-release fertilizer significantly increased grain yield in the field compared to the traditional one at the same dose. A reduction in nitrogen content in the new fertilizer also showed similar physiological and yield responses as the traditional fertilizer. This new fertilizer can be used in extensive maize cropping, guaranteeing similar yields while reducing soil properties and nitrogen losses.

A biobased, bioactive, low CO2 impact coating for soil improvers

Renate Weiss et al.

Summary: Bioactive coatings based on lignosulfonate and developed using laccase as a biocatalyst were successfully created to improve soil for lawns. The addition of glycerol, xylitol, and sorbitol as plasticizers helped reduce brittleness in the coatings, while thermal enzyme inactivation at 100 degrees Celsius enabled stable coating production. The incorporation of beneficial microorganisms and the ability to reduce CO2 emissions make these coatings a promising alternative to fossil-based options.
