Methane emission via sediment and water interface in the Bohai Sea, China

Kunpeng Zang et al.

Summary: Sediment is the main reservoir and source of methane in the ocean, but there is limited data on methane concentration in sediment in China's shelf seas. This study found that methane concentration in sediment was 2 to 3 orders of magnitude higher than that in overlying seawater columns. Surface sediment was identified as an important source of methane, while bottom seawater acted as a sink. Additionally, the study suggests that earthquakes may enhance methane release from sediment to the seawater column.

Environmental profile, distributions and potential sources of halogenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons

Jingqian Xie et al.

Summary: Halogenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (HPAHs) are highly lipophilic and degradation-resistant compounds, which have been widely detected in air, water, sediment, and biota, posing adverse effects on animals and humans. Despite the recognition of their importance, there is still a lack of research, particularly in water and sediment matrices, highlighting the need for further investigation.

Degradation of organic contaminants in marine sediments by peroxymonosulfate over LaFeO3 nanoparticles supported on water caltrop shell-derived biochar and the associated microbial community responses

Chang-Mao Hung et al.

Summary: The LFBC/PMS process enhances the biological richness and diversity of sediment ecosystems, leading to changes in the bacterial community. Under optimal conditions, LFBC/PMS treatment can degrade 90% of total PAHs in 24 hours, with degradation efficiency for 2-, 3-, 4-, 5-, and 6-ring PAHs at 52%, 61%, 66%, 56%, and 29% respectively. The Langmuir-Hinshelwood equation successfully predicts the PAHs degradation kinetics over LFBC by PMS.

Effect of production temperature in biochar properties from bamboo culm and its influences on atrazine adsorption from aqueous systems

Mariana Sbizzaro et al.

Summary: Biochar from bamboo culm was produced at three different temperatures and evaluated for its efficiency in atrazine adsorption. The results showed that higher production temperature led to enhanced aromaticity and surface area of biochar, resulting in improved atrazine adsorption capacity. Among the three biochars tested, the one produced at 450 degrees C exhibited the best performance in atrazine removal.

Evaluation of the trophic structure and energy flow of a rice-crayfish integrated farming ecosystem based on the Ecopath model

Shipeng Dong et al.

Summary: Rice field integrated farming combining aquaculture and rice cultivation can enhance ecological efficiency, but it has issues with simplicity, linearity, and low stability in the food web model structure. The system shows high total system throughput and transfer efficiency, indicating potential for optimization. Analyzing the trophic structure and energy flow of the system reveals the need for further improvement in this farming model.
