Antibacterial activity of V- doped rod-like MgO crystals decorated with nanoflake layer

Rong Dai et al.

Summary: In this study, a V doping method was used to obtain rod-like MgO crystals decorated with a nanoflake layer. The effect of V doping on the crystal structure and particle morphology of MgO was investigated. It was found that V doping significantly increased the specific surface area and pore size of MgO, and also dramatically improved its antibacterial properties. The results suggest that 7 mol% V doping induced the best antibacterial activity.

A comprehensive review on integrative approach for sustainable management of plastic waste and its associated externalities

M. S. S. R. Tejaswini et al.

Summary: The management of post-consumer discarded plastic wastes in developing countries presents challenges due to lack of amenities and technological interventions. Improper management leads to negative environmental externalities such as pollution and health issues. Urban mining and circular economy can minimize these externalities and convert plastic waste into resources, contributing to sustainable development goals.

Potential for future reductions of global GHG and air pollutants from circular waste management systems

Adriana Gomez-Sanabria et al.

Summary: Based on the Shared Socioeconomic Pathways, a global systematic approach is developed to evaluate the potential reduction of greenhouse gas and air pollutant emissions through circular municipal waste management systems. The study contrasts two sets of global scenarios and finds that a sustainability-oriented mitigation strategy produces earlier and larger co-benefits compared to scenarios focused solely on technical solutions. The findings indicate that the sustainability-oriented scenario can eliminate ambient air pollution from open burning entirely before 2050, while still having 386 Tg CO2eq/yr of GHG (CH4 and CO2) to be released.

Significantly enhanced photocatalytic in-situ H2O2 production and consumption activities for efficient sterilization by ZnIn2S4/g-C3N4 heterojunction

Yuanyuan Shao et al.

Summary: We report a superior carbon-related ZnIn2S4/g-C3N4 catalyst with excellent H2O2 generation and consumption capabilities for efficient sterilization under visible light irradiation. The 2D/2D heterojunction of ZnIn2S4/g-C3N4 exhibits a remarkable H2O2 yield of 4.27 mmol g(-1), which is much higher than that of current catalysts. The in-situ produced H2O2 can be quickly activated to strong oxidizing hydroxyl radicals for sterilization, achieving complete clearance of Escherichia coli (E. coli) within 25 min and 98% killing of Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) after 60 min irradiation. The prepared photocatalysts enable rapid production and consumption of H2O2, providing an effective green strategy for sterilization via in-situ generated H2O2.

Kinetic modeling of malondialdehyde reactivity in oil to simulate actual malondialdehyde formation upon lipid oxidation

Angelique Vandemoortele et al.

Summary: The reactivity of malondialdehyde in saturated glycerol triheptanoate oil was studied using a kinetic model that described its reactions as reversible hydrolytic cleavage and irreversible aldol self-condensation. Significant parameter estimates were obtained through a global one step non-linear regression procedure. The study showed that the main degradation route of malondialdehyde in oils is through aldol self-condensation, and that experimentally obtained concentrations may underestimate lipid oxidation processes depending on heating time.
