Carbon reduction in commercial building operations: A provincial retrospection in China

Kai Li et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the carbon reduction changes of commercial building operations in China from 2001 to 2016, finding that provinces in northeast and north China led in reduction intensity and amount, while southwest provinces had the highest reduction-emission efficiency. The annual carbon reductions based on provincial units peaked at 167.35 MtCO(2) in 2013, with effective practices by local governments summarized for energy efficiency promotion in commercial building operations.

Analysing community-based initiatives for heating and cooling: A systematic and critical review

Javanshir Fouladvand et al.

Summary: Energy communities are decentralized socio-technical systems where energy is generated and distributed locally among households. However, there is a lack of research on community-based initiatives for heating and cooling using thermal energy as an alternative energy carrier. This article aims to organize existing research using the IAD framework and identify future research topics. The analysis shows that there has been a rapid growth in publications in this area, with a focus on technological challenges. Few papers take an institutional perspective, and there is little research on thermal technologies other than solar and bio-based energy. It is recommended to study thermal energy communities as distinct entities and further explore the institutional constraints and consumer perspectives.

Farmer characteristics and decision-making: A model for bioenergy crop adoption

Pralhad H. Burli et al.

Summary: The commercial development of biofuels and bioproducts relies on the availability of renewable biomass feedstock that does not compete directly with food production. Farmers are key stakeholders in the biofuel supply chain and their decision-making process is complex and not purely rational. Agent-based modeling is a suitable framework for evaluating such systems due to the wide range of factors and interactions involved.

Influence of distribution tariff structures and peer effects on the adoption of distributed energy resources

J. A. Moncada et al.

Summary: The article investigates the impact of different distribution tariff structures and peer effects on the adoption of distributed energy resources by residential consumers and the allocation of electricity distribution costs. It found that non-economic factors, such as peer effects, play a crucial role in short-term decision-making.

An ex ante assessment of value conflicts and social acceptance of sustainable heating systems An agent-based modelling approach

Tristan E. de Wildt et al.

Summary: This paper demonstrates an approach to assess the social acceptance of sustainable heating systems in city districts by identifying value conflicts embedded in these systems. A case study in The Hague, the Netherlands is used to illustrate the application of this approach, which can support decision-making processes of policymakers at the local level.
