The differences in characteristics of extracellular polymeric substances of flocs and anammox granules impacted aggregation

Shuai Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, the differences in EPS characteristics of different types of sludge were investigated, and it was found that anammox granular sludge has higher flocculation ability, primarily due to its higher zeta potential, hydrophobicity, and intermolecular hydrogen bond ratio.

A review on the characteristics of microplastics in wastewater treatment plants: A source for toxic chemicals

Amir Hossein Hamidian et al.

Summary: Wastewater treatment plants are a significant source of microplastics discharged into the environment, with their characteristics in different environmental matrices still largely unknown. Most microplastics in water samples are composed of PET, PS, PP, and PE, with a significant proportion being removed during primary and secondary treatment stages, and MBR being the most efficient tertiary treatment technology. The majority of microplastics removed during wastewater treatment end up in sewage sludge and are released into the environment via sludge applications.

Understanding the fate of nano-plastics in wastewater treatment plants and their removal using membrane processes

Anika Amir Mohana et al.

Summary: Nanoplastics have become a significant environmental concern due to their adverse effects on water environments. Wastewater treatment plants are identified as major sources of nanoparticle generation, primarily through the mechanism of cracking larger plastic debris. Current membrane processes are ineffective for nanoparticle removal, leading to the need for developing a bio-nanofiltration process as an alternative method. This process can produce nanoparticle-free water for safe discharge.

Effects of polystyrene nanoplastics on extracellular polymeric substance composition of activated sludge: The role of surface functional groups

Jin Qian et al.

Summary: The study investigated the acute effects of three polystyrene nanoplastics on the extracellular polymeric substance composition of activated sludge. The results showed significant inhibition in EPS and protein production, as well as cellular oxidative stress and cell membrane damage. The influence on EPS and cytotoxicity of activated sludge varied with the surface functional groups of the polystyrene nanoplastics.
